As the pūrākau (legend) goes: Aoraki came to Earth with his three brothers, and their return journey back to the heavens went wrong, and their waka (canoe) crashed into Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa (the Pacific Ocean), forming Te Waipounamu (South Island). To save themselves, the brothers climbed to the highest side of the waka and became the highest peaks of Kā Tiritiri-o-te-moana (the Southern Alps). ⁠
