Supporting a DOC mission from the skies

We were incredibly proud to support Department of Conservation (DOC)’s Recovery programme in their ongoing mahi to restore takahē to the wild — with the recent release of a further 33 manu into the stunning Rees Valley.

This DOC-led initiative, in partnership with , , .nz, and the .nature.fund, is part of a long-term commitment to bring this once-thought-extinct taonga species back to its natural habitat.

We were lucky enough to lend a hand by helping transport these special passengers to their new alpine home.

🌿 The Rees Valley is now home to over 50 takahē — making it the second-largest wild population in Aotearoa. A massive milestone in native species recovery, and one we're grateful to be a small part of.

Huge congratulations to the Pyke River Preservation Society on the completion of the fantastic Olivine Hut rebuild! Heli Glenorchy was delighted to offer our support to this amazing community-funded initiative.

Flashback to the very first Heli Glenorchy flight! On February 10th, 2015, our journey officially started with Flight 1 in the NOTAR ZK-IJW.

The destination? The stunning Norton Saddle on Mt Larkin, departing from Glenorchy.

Throwing it back to an early adventure in IJW — one of the first helicopters in our fleet. Hard to believe how many incredible journeys began right here. ⛰️

We are honoured to announce our new partnership with the Southern Lakes Sanctuary - a consortium of six local groups that collectively represent 84 community groups, landowners, and businesses who have been working for many years to protect and restore the biodiversity of the Southern Lakes Region.

Together, we’re combining our love for adventure and nature to help protect the unique wildlife of the Rees Valley and beyond.

The wild spaces we fly through every day are not just stunning landscapes, but also vital habitats for hundreds of native species in need of protection. The SLS team work tirelessly to monitor and control predators in these sensitive environments, but it’s a big job! And a lot of ground to cover on foot…

That’s why we’re so excited to be providing aerial ops support to the Southern Lakes Sanctuary team. By flying them to their trapping sites in the Rees Valley on our scenic flights, they can focus more on the work that matters and less on getting from A to B. Flying with us on a Glacier Express or an Earnslaw Burn Heli-Hike? You might have a member of the SLS team along for the ride, and can find out first-hand about all the mahi being done to protect the taonga species in our own backyard.

Join us in supporting local conservation efforts while experiencing the beauty of Glenorchy like never before. Stay tuned for updates, and follow along – we can’t wait to share the journey with you.
