✨ ON THIS DAY IN WEST COAST HISTORY ✨

On 10 September 1909, Scott and Sharpe headed out into the Ross goldfields looking for a bit of gold… and came back with 3.09 kg of it! ⛏️💰

Their incredible find, later named the ‘Honourable Roddy’, remains New Zealand’s largest recorded gold nugget.

A few years later, the Government decided this enormous lump of West Coast gold would make a rather impressive Coronation gift for King George V. 👑

And then… things got a little strange.

Around 40 years later, enquiries revealed that the Honourable Roddy had been melted down and turned into a royal tea service! 🍵

And the strangest part? The tea service itself was later reported to be missing… 👀

So somewhere out there, there may have been a rather fancy royal cuppa made from 3.09 kg of Ross gold - and its fate remains a bit of a mystery…

💧 Greater Greymouth residents are now being asked to conserve water ahead of a major shutdown this coming Monday, when the NZTA will be working on the new Coal Creek bridge.

For up to six hours on Monday, September 7, consumers will be relying on reservoir supply.

The work to move the water main will be done from 10pm to 4am to minimise disruption.

The Council has reservoirs at Omoto, Arnott Heights, Tasman View, and Stanton Crescent. We will be reliant on these and, whilst the work has been planned in detail, there is potential for loss of supply should it be extended for any reason.

There is the potential for water loss in some elevated areas, and there may be limited or varying pressure during the works.

Residents of the following areas are now asked to conserve water: Greymouth, Cobden, Blaketown, Boddytown, Karoro, South Beach, Paroa, Kaiata, Dobson, Stillwater and Coal Creek, as well as Runanga, Dunollie, Rapahoe, and Taylorville.

As back-up, please ensure you have water in stock to last several days.

The site work itself is weather-dependent and could be delayed.
For road users, a detour is available via State Highway 7 and Taylorville Road, adding 15-20 minutes to the journey.
