Meet the Hapuku (often called “Hapuka” or Groper in New Zealand).

One of the true deep-water kings of the South Island.

These fish live hundreds of metres down, around underwater cliffs, drop-offs and reefs. They’re powerful, heavy, and when they hit the line — you know about it.

A few cool facts about hapuka:
• They can grow over 1.5 metres long
• Weigh up to 100kg
• Live in deep offshore waters around New Zealand
• Are one of the best-eating fish in the ocean

Catching one isn’t luck. It takes the right gear, the right ground, and a bit of muscle when they decide to fight.

And when one like this comes over the rail — that’s a moment you don’t forget.
