📢 Major Update: New Post-Study Work Visa Options Effective 16 November 2026

Immigration New Zealand has announced significant changes to graduate pathways, designed to better align international student talent with local skill needs.

Effective from 16 November 2026, a new short-term visa will launch, alongside an extended scope for the Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV).

Here is everything you need to know:
1️⃣ New Short-Term Graduate Work Visa
✅ Designed to give non-degree graduates a bridge into the workforce or further study.
✅ Graduates of Level 5–7 Diplomas who studied for a minimum of 24 weeks.
✅ 6 months of OPEN work rights to find work, apply for an AEWV, or transition to higher study.
✅ Can only be availed ONCE.
✅ Cannot support family visas while holding this visa.
✅ Must meet funds, health, and character requirements.

2️⃣ Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV) Extended
✅ Open work rights are now extended to those studying a Graduate Diploma Level 7.
✅ Applies to Graduate Diploma Level 7 graduates—ONLY if they also hold a recognised Bachelor’s degree. This also applies to current visa holders who have conditions on their PSWV.
✅ Equal to the length of the course (up to a maximum of 1 year).
✅ Granted ONCE per lifetime.
✅ Can support family visas while on this work visa.
✅ Must meet funds, health, and character requirements.

📢 Upcoming Changes to NZ’s AEWV: English Language Requirements Extended to Skill Level 3

Starting 1 June 2026, Immigration New Zealand is extending the minimum English language requirements for the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) to include ANZSCO or NOL Skill Level 3 roles.

If you are an employer recruiting for these roles, or a migrant planning your next visa steps, here is what you need to know to prepare:

🔹 The Core Requirement

Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency, which can be achieved by:
Achieving an IELTS band of 4 overall (or equivalent approved test) OR Meeting the criteria via citizenship or specific English-speaking work/study history.

🔹 Who is Exempt?
To ensure fairness, several key exemptions are in place:
- Existing AEWV holders are unaffected for the remaining duration of their valid visa.
- If your current AEWV expires on or before 1 December 2026 and you are applying for a further Level 3 AEWV, you are exempt.
-If you already provided English evidence in a prior AEWV application, you do not need to re-submit.
- The rule does not apply to Job Change applications, the Global Workforce Seasonal Visa, or the Peak Seasonal Visa.

💡 Pro-Tip for Employers: Any Skill Level 3 application submitted from 1 June 2026 onwards must meet these new rules—even if the Job Check token was approved before June 1. Factor this into your recruitment pipelines now to avoid onboarding delays.
