With the general election coming this November, immigration policy “electioneering” has already begun. To have your say on election day it is important to understand who is eligible to vote, and who is not.

Generally, you must be a New Zealand citizen or resident who meets the living in New Zealand requirements, and you must be 18 years or older.

You are NOT eligible to vote if you are:

• A New Zealand citizen who has been outside the country for the last 3 years
• A New Zealand resident who has been outside the country for the last 12 months
• Holding any temporary visa (e.g. student, work, or visitor visas)
• Serving a prison sentence of 3 years or more, or a sentence of less than 3 years for any offences committed on or after 20 December 2025
• Detained in a psychiatric hospital for more than 3 years after being charged with a criminal offence
• Convicted of electoral corruption and listed on the Corrupt Practices List

The Active Investor Plus (AIP) Visa continues to maintain strong momentum, with 688 applications received as at 5 May 2026 and a potential NZD $4.015 billion in investment. With fast processing times, low physical presence requirements, and a clear pathway to permanent residence, the AIP programme is reinforcing New Zealand’s appeal as a leading destination for global investors.

Applicants now come from a wide and increasingly diverse range of countries. While the United States continues to lead, its share of total applications is gradually reducing as interest in the AIP expands across Asia and Europe.

Monthly application volumes remain steady at around 40 per month, and Immigration New Zealand processing continues to be timely and efficient. Investor preference (85%) remains firmly focused on the Growth category, reflecting the lower minimum investment threshold and reduced time in New Zealand requirements. This trend is now well established and unlikely to shift even though funds must be invested in more active investments.

Capital deployment is increasing at a slightly faster rate than application growth and as a consequence of investors completing their investments. Approximately 38% of applicants have now obtained their resident visas. This upward trend is expected to continue, due to applicants having to complete their investments within six months of approval in principle.

The AIP programme is performing strongly across all key indicators, including application growth, processing efficiency, and capital deployment. New Zealand is now firmly positioned as a leading destination for investor migrants, particularly for those seeking a stable, well-regulated environment and access to high-quality investment opportunities.

The primary challenge ahead is no longer demand but ensuring that sufficient, suitable and good quality investment-ready opportunities are available to effectively absorb the increasing volume of capital.
