With the general election coming this November, immigration policy โelectioneeringโ has already begun. To have your say on election day it is important to understand who is eligible to vote, and who is not.
Generally, you must be a New Zealand citizen or resident who meets the living in New Zealand requirements, and you must be 18 years or older.
You are NOT eligible to vote if you are:
โข A New Zealand citizen who has been outside the country for the last 3 years
โข A New Zealand resident who has been outside the country for the last 12 months
โข Holding any temporary visa (e.g. student, work, or visitor visas)
โข Serving a prison sentence of 3 years or more, or a sentence of less than 3 years for any offences committed on or after 20 December 2025
โข Detained in a psychiatric hospital for more than 3 years after being charged with a criminal offence
โข Convicted of electoral corruption and listed on the Corrupt Practices List
