A view so striking, it demands your attention! This spectacular image of the Inferno Crater, shared by Waimangu Volcanic Valley Rotorua New Zealand, captures a beautiful example of New Zealand’s geothermal heart.
Visiting Waimangu Volcanic Valley is a Your Choice optional activity on many of our tours visiting Rotorua, combining dramatic volcanic scenery, geothermal wonders, rare plant life, and a cruise across Lake Rotomahana to the old site of the world-famous Pink and White terraces - once considered the eighth wonder of the world.
There's something about standing at the edge of Inferno Crater that’ll take your breath away and leave you in awe.
Over a 38-day cycle, the lake’s surface rises and falls, reaching up to 30 metres deep at its peak, when it shows off a brilliant shade of sky-blue.
It also heats up to a sizzling 80°C – so leave your swimwear behind!
As the geyser plays underwater, spot the fumaroles steaming away on the lake’s shore, and take in the sheer scale of this geothermal wonder.
Thanks to Rueven for this superb snap 💙
