Our shot of the Moon from our new site tonight!

New Moon = Dark skies and stunning Milky Way 🌌

What is New Moon you may ask? This is the invisible phase of the Moon, with the illuminated side of the Moon facing the Sun and the night side facing Earth. In this phase, the Moon is in the same part of the sky as the Sun and rises and sets with the Sun. Not only is the illuminated side facing away from the Earth, it’s also up during the day. In this phase, the Moon doesn’t usually pass directly between Earth and the Sun, due to the inclination of the Moon’s orbit. It only passes near the Sun from our perspective on Earth.

With forecasts looking good, the next few nights are looking like a great time to experience just some of the action going on above us every night.

It was my pleasure to do a promotional photo shoot for Manuka Skies earlier this week. We got some great photos and had a blast!
These guys put on an star tour like no other. Their genuine passion, enthusiasm and knowledge for the night sky really shows.
Thanks also to the locals that came up for this with very short notice, you guys were awesome! They really expressed the experience in a photo 😅.

A fantastic tour on our new elevated site last night!

Part of our evening was spent learning the differences between these two stars. One is in the prime of its life and the other, well, is on the way out and due to go Supernova within the next million years.

Meet Sirius and Antares. Sirius is the brightest star in our skies and Antares sits in the heart of Scorpius, rising from our eastern horizon at this time of the year.

Want to learn more? Book a spot on our tours and we'll show you what the skies are like at 650mtr elevation 😍

Comet C/2025 R3 Panstarrs visible low in the western sky. This image was taken in the Hanmer basin last night using our imaging telescope.

Visible for the next few days as it gets further away from us, next time we'll get to see it is hundreds of thousands of years away, so we decided best to get in now!
