Time to wake up legs… our annual traverse of the Southern Alps is looming, I’m a little bit worried.
Fred’s made some huge missions through the alps already he looks lean and mean… I’ve been eating and watering too much in the USA and my left knee is not quite 100%.

The lure of the wild, famous Otago and South Westland valleys, big summer chamois and the possibility of a big public land stag, how to you combat that? You can’t you’ve got to go and meet it.

Guide Ethan Stevenson with a 420 class estate red stag, the first of two stags shot by our first hunter of the 2025 season. Good length at 42” and huge inside span of 33 5/8ths.

Our hunts run to a set schedule with hunts from mid February leading up to March 15 based around estate red stags. From 15 March (the start of the roar) we’re into our free-range Otago red stag hunts which run right through to the end of the roar in early May.

Our peak dates are mid April - early May, great crossover rut dates for free range red stags, tahr, fallow and chamois. We run 3-4 species combo hunts over this time.

Today marks the end of show season for us. Probably our best show ever in 5 years of attending shows in the USA. Best of...

Today marks the end of show season for us. Probably our best show ever in 5 years of attending shows in the USA. Best of all we got to spend time with Russell from Alberta our assistant guide 2023 & 2024, what a champion!!!

Great to educate more international hunters about our free range red stag hunts and that they are available with LHHS in New Zealand. A high quality, high percentage, genuine free range hunt.

With Caribou hunts in Alaska now reaching $35,000 we feel our incredible Otago stag hunts are well priced.

Been an interesting spread for us at the Salt Lake Show selling a mix of Estate based hunts, free range private land hunts & wilderness hunts (where it all started for us 19 years ago).

As our show season was finishing today our Estate stag season was starting back in NZ with guide Ethan taking two nice stags with his client in the last 2 days.

Start of our main season is now very close, looking forward to getting home to sunny February and our biggest season yet.

A five year old bull tahr that walked in to 20 yards in the rut of 2023. Russell and I had some fun photographing him. I don’t think he’d seen too many people.

When we first started outfitting in 2007, tahr and chamois hunts were the only two species we offered. From there we built steadily and began to aquire access to some of the finest free range private country possible to offer deer species and a range of accommodations other than just a basic tent camp.

From 15 March - 4 May our whole operation is based around all our hunters primary animal being a free range Otago red stag.

Once we get through to mid April we get a great rut cross over. The stags are still roaring well and the tahr, chamois and fallow are also rutting - our hunters are then adding these species to their stag hunts.

One month to go and we’re back into doing what we do best at LHHS. The chat is starting to build amongst the guide team - we’re getting excited!!

We’re fully booked on free-range reds for 2025, some openings still left for ‘26.
