A nice trip to the Canterbury foothills today to Woodside forest to cruise through some beech forest to mark trees for extraction with Mark and Angus McKenzie from Timbers of New Zealand with the bonus of meeting John Wardle in the forest and having a good old chin wag about Beech timber and trees etc..

Back at the mill it sounds like a few disasters caused by splitting hoses causing a delay in unloading log trucks but all ended well thankfully.

Some native Hard Beech across the mill this week, a good photo showing the rippled outside of the logs and one still covered in bark.

And a good shot of the inside of the big log.
This is how beech slowly dies as they rot from the inside and slowly decay outwards.
Moral of the story - never trust large beech trees/logs!

A quick job on a Sunday for www.shipwrightservices.co.nz to make sure they had wood for a job first thing Monday morning!

Trying to keep everything ship shape around here 😅

Hopefully some beautiful eucalyptus globulous tables will be made from this timber shortly!

Our friend Ben from Hammers and Spanners borrowing our trailer taking a load of cypress home to turn into more tables and planter boxes!
Always a good end to the week seeing some timber go out the gate but even more so when you know its going to be made into all sorts of cool things!

Some fantastic tables and such by Ben here from timber like the giant Milton Street redwood!
Its always nice to see some final products from timber we have milled!

A trip to Marlborough today to pickup a new tool for the collection!

This beautiful contraption is a Whites wide belt sander.
This will allow us to sand just over a meter wide so we can thickness and final sand bench tops etc which is rather exciting!

This and our other wood tools will be going into our new shed we are building at the mill so sadly we cant push it into use just yet sadly

Two loads of big chunky 180 year old white oak arrived today 🙂 (q.robur)
They came from the village of Wakefield where I grew up and they were planted by my very first school teachers grandfather on Bird Road - by the Bird family!
Small place is the Tasman region!
While it's sad to see such large and old trees come out I am glad we can 'treecycle' these into another use!

There's some hard work coming up to get these all sorted so more to come in the future 🙂

A good week slugging out eucalyptus flooring and such with a day off on Friday as we all decided we had better things to do in the bad weather!

Some lovely clear grain in this stuff and there's a lot stacking up for drying now!

Who would have this on their own floor?
