Meet the Interns Part 2!

Ashlin is currently a masters student at the University of Canterbury, researching our very own NZ Fur Seals 🦭

She joins us as an intern for GKWC2026 hoping to gain more experience in marine mammal research, this time with whales! 🐋 🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋

Ashlin is originally from Greymouth NZ but has spent time in Dunedin where she did her undergraduate studies at the University of Otago in Ecology & Marine Science, before moving to Christchurch to start her postgraduate studies in Ecology at UC.

They are aiming to have Whale Spotters out every day throughout June, weather permitting, so when you email, please let them know which dates and shift times you’d like to join them for.

Sign up for shifts as a Whale Spotter by emailing us at gkwc2026 .com. Shifts run 10 am - 12 noon, noon - 2 pm and 2 - 4 pm 🐋🌈

We aim to have spotters spotting on every day in June that weather permits, so when you email, please let us know the dates and the shifts you will join us for.

Coming soon to a WhaleWay near you! The Great Kaikōura Whale Count 2026, an annual event to celebrate the whales and our community, is just around the corner ! 🐋

KORI is looking for two interns to help us 1) lead data collection from the Kaikōura Peninsula every day the weather allows throughout the month of June, 2) coordinate the volunteer whale spotter roster and 3) support the inclusive activities and events that will be part of GKWC2026 ! 🐋

If you think this sounds like you, please email your CV to kaikourakori @ gmail.com by Sunday May 17 at 6:00pm. Successful interns will need to be in Kaikōura for the last week of May and throughout June. Note this is a volunteer position 🐋
