Giant S***m Whales are the stars of the show and year-round residents. A typical Whale Watch tour may encounter New Zealand Fur Seals, pods of Dusky dolphins and the endangered Wandering Albatross. Depending on the se

ason you may also see migrating; Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales, Southern Right Whales. Kaikōura often hosts Orca and is home to the world's smallest and rarest the Hector's. Kaikōura also attracts the largest concentration and variety of seabirds on mainland New Zealand including 13 species of Albatross, 14 varieties of Petrels and 7 types of Shearwater. Please note that at times images viewed on our website and social media channels have been taken with a zoom lens. Our interactions with marine mammals adhere to all regulations set in place, with these being outlined during our tours. www.whalewatch.co.nz

Last weekend, members of New Zealand's Large Whale Disentanglement Team were called into action after a young male Tohorā (Southern Right whale) became entangled in commercial fishing gear near Rakiura/Stewart Island.

Local fishers quickly alerted Department of Conservation after discovering the whale and a specialist response team, including DOC, Environment Canterbury and members of the Whale Watch Kaikoura team, were deployed to assist.

The team successfully removed the entangling gear in around 45 minutes. Whale disentanglements are some of the most challenging and technically demanding wildlife rescues undertaken in New Zealand. Responders work in close proximity to large, powerful mammals, often in unpredictable sea conditions.

The Southern Right whale population is still recovering. We are incredibly grateful for all those involved helping to ensure future generations to experience the privilege of seeing these whales 🐋
