Over the past week, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting a number of our stargazing tours out at Mangamaunu Retreat , and it’s been such a special spot to share the night sky from. ❤️

Away from the lights, surrounded by the mountains and coastline, it gives our guests an incredible setting to slow down, look up and experience just how spectacular Kaikōura’s skies can be. ✨

We’ve had some brilliant clear nights, plenty of “wow” moments through the telescopes, and some very happy guests.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us this week — and to Mangamaunu for providing such a beautiful place to explore the cosmos. Here’s to many more nights under the stars 🌌🔭

School Holiday Family Space Weekend! 🪐🚀🧑‍🚀

Life is expensive at the moment, especially for parents… with that being said, We’ve got the first weekend of the school holidays covered without costing you an arm and a leg!

On Friday 25 September, families can join us for a special kids focused evening of stargazing under Kaikōura’s dark skies. 🌌

Then on Saturday 26 September, we’ll be over at our Moana Skies Astronomy Centre with a bunch of kid-focused space activities, games, challenges, telescope viewing, solar observing, space trivia and hands-on astronomy. 🎉

The Saturday session is designed to be fun and interactive for the kids — this is not just our standard stargazing tour spread over two days.

and plenty of chances for kids to get properly involved.

A little update from us as we head into spring 🌌

From later this month, our Explore the Cosmos Stargazing Experience will be increasing from $109 to $129 per adult.

At the same time, we’re also introducing a new Under 16s rate of $109, helping keep the experience accessible for families while we continue to grow and invest in what we offer here at Moana Skies.

We’ll also now be able to welcome up to 10 guests per tour, while still keeping the small-group feel that’s always been so important to us.

For the next two weeks, you can still book at our current adult rate of $109, so if you’ve been thinking about joining us under the Kaikōura sky, now’s a great time to lock it in ✨

New pricing:

Adults — $129
Under 16s — $109
Any bookings already made will of course remain at the original rate.

🌌 Spring skies are almost here 🌌

We might be about to say goodbye to winter, but for stargazing, the change of season brings a whole new night sky with it.

Over the next few weeks our tours will gradually begin a little later as sunset pushes back — but it also means some of our favourite objects are starting to make their return and as the weeks roll on, an entirely different collection of stars, clusters and deep-sky objects replaces our winter favourites. That’s one of the things we love most about what we do. No two times of year under the Kaikōura night sky are quite the same. ⭐️

These photos are from some of our recent nights out — and while we’re definitely going to miss those early winter sunsets, we’re pretty excited about what’s coming next.

It might not look much like stargazing weather in Kaikōura right now, so we thought we’d use the opportunity to show you a little more of what we do when the skies do play ball. 🔭✨

Our Moana Skies Astronomy Centre is our little home for all things space — packed with telescopes, astronomy displays, VR experiences and plenty of opportunities to get hands-on and learn more about the universe above us.

On clear days, we bring the telescopes outside for safe solar viewing, giving visitors the chance to see our nearest star in an entirely different way. ☀️

And once darkness falls, our focus turns to Kaikōura’s incredible night sky. 🌌

The weather might be winning this weekend… but the stars aren’t going anywhere. 😉
