Precious few students here this summer, so not a lot to write about really. The devastation by the 2016 earthquake was still curtaiing study movements right up until Christmas, and a phenomally dry November affected the study of local forest birds, which abamdoned their nests due to inability to feed chicks. More recently the tail end iof a tropical cyclone disrupted the work of Marine ecologists who had to revise field work and ended up not comimg here at all. They would have been lucky to exit the West Coast, which may have acquired as much infrastructue damage as did Kaikoura in 2016

Great spell of fine weather here. Been out in boat twice recently with reasonable catches of blue cod each time. Had good company yesterday in the form of Shawn, a marine ecologist who comes up from Christchurch once or teice a month. He is good value in the boat and I hope we will get out again some time.
The effects of last years EQ still ripple through Kaikoura, This week the Four Square store which was damaged, but managed to struggle on for 12 months, gave up on the unequal contest with tardy insurance and beaurocracy, closed its doors for good. There are now a lot of empty premises and plots in town

One year on from the earthquake that threw him from his bed in the flat and resulted in our not even meeting at the time, a bird research student is finally back here to resume his studies at Kowhai Bush. Fate has not repented, however; the wet winter and early spring gave way abruptly to a phenomaly dry spwll (4.5mm precipitation since Oct 27), which is resulting in dieback among native trees, which in turn has caused supposedly breeding birds to abandon their nests,

Just back from 10 days in Rarotonga, snorkelling, socialising, feasting and drinking. All highly reccommended. :-)

Kaikoura harness races this long weekend, and the clerk of the weather did the district proud!. Fine, sunny and near windless. Great. I have been unwell recently with a persistent lurgy which is said to take ten weeks to abate, but I must be nearly there by now. It is a good year for cabbage-tree blossom, and the wet winter has ensured a verdently green countryside, Apparently there are numerous crayfish being caught, but I have had to pass up on crayfishing; one has to recognise ones limitations. Well actually one is forced to, by sheer inabiity to cope.

Yesterdays post is still there, so it looks as though I am out of the woods at last.
Seafest was a great success a few weeks ago, with huge support from out-of-towners, which was great for Kaikoura. Unfortunitely the reopening of the railway with such enthusiasm weeks ago seems to have fizzled out. I don't think there has been another train since then, on account of a great deal of rain.
I have only one student here, as several who used to alternate between Kaikoura and the Marlbouough sounds, now have too long a road journey between the locations, so they just go to the souinds it seems.I am still getting on famously with my new neighbours :-)

After weeks of fruitless juggling, suddenly I can make posts again! But early days yet - there could be more hoops to jump through. Let's see if this does appear

New season's students starting to arrive; two regular marine ecologists here for 3 nights this week, and one of last season's bird people returning for a while soon. Weather remains pretty grotty, but have sown/planted some vegetables in the garden. The house next door on my right, has aprouted a ""SOLD"" sign on the front fence, but details are still under wraps. Hope it won't interfere with my bird students' mist netting on the lawn there.

Kaikoura still managed to host the anual classic car hop last weekend, though it was on a lesser scale due to the access from the north being long and tedious. SH1 to Christchurch will be open for major events - Sea Fest, Kaikoura Race day, Canterbury Aniversary - but will be closed 5 days a week at some other times in order to pursue the goal of reopening it properly by Christmas. Check before you travel. These road closures can be serious - my favourite cafe ran out of coffee beans yesterday, and I had to settle for tea or chocolate. Grim stuff, But then one remembers what has been happening around the globe...... Environmental disaster after environmental disaster. One wonders how civilisation will cope.
