Happy Birthday to AA guides and šŸŽ‰šŸ„³

What are the odds these two fishy units were born on the same day? According to the internet… about 1 in 122. But the internet isn’t great at gauging fishiness.
We are though — so let’s call it 1 in a million. Factor in positivity and it’s one in a billion.

Legends, the pair of you. šŸŽ‚šŸŸšŸ™Œ

10 Years of Pat and Matt

The three of us met over a decade ago on a river in Mongolia. Pat and Matt were just beginning their fly fishing journey, and I was a fresh faced taimen guide. The very next New Zealand trout season they appeared on the South Island, and we had our first of what would become many adventures together. They’ve shown up every year since—often multiple times a season.

We’ve walked a lot of kilometres, seen some truly beautiful corners of the country, caught a lot of fish, and shared a lot of laughter. We’ve also lost plenty of fish, swatted clouds of sandflies, nursed sore muscles, and occasionally questioned our own sanity. But no matter the outcome, the experience is always the same: positive.

Pat and Matt have fully embraced the way of the Kiwi angler—almost never complaining about the absurd distances we cover, never blaming the fish for a missed hook-set, and in recent years I’ve even heard them quietly chanting ā€œthe wind is my friendā€ while attempting to turn over an 18-foot leader into a headwind that really isn’t anyone’s friend. The tough days are collectively known as ā€œdeposits in the bankā€ā€” hopefully to be cashed out one day soon as a trophy trout… preferably on a dry fly.

Thanks for all the memories, fellas. Here’s to the next ten years. šŸŽ£ šŸ»

Big proportions on small creeks. Spring has been all over the place — and today is particularly yuck. But this too shall pass. The sun will return, the rivers will clear, and the winds will calm. Say it with us now: The sun will return…..

Stay dry, stay safe out there today, folks! ā›ˆļø

Early season in the backcountry isn’t for the feint of heart but when the going gets tough, the tough…. make a cup of tea. September 1st marked the first day of spring in NZ and Oct. 1st (today!) is the opening of many of our brown trout rivers—the anticipation has been palpable but at last we have arrived!

We still have a bit of availability this month so please get in touch if you’d like to get out for a day trip or a bigger adventure — don’t miss out on one of our favourite months of the season!!

Tomorrow, October 1st, marks the opening of trout season on the South Island — one of the most exciting days of the year for us. šŸŽ£

Before the season kicks off, we just want to say thank you. To the anglers who joined us this winter, to friends, family, fellow guides, and agents — your support means everything. From referrals to shuttles to simply spreading the good word, we couldn’t do it without you.

Our winter drift program is still new but it’s slowly growing, and that is no doubt all thanks to this awesome community.

Here’s to another great season ahead! šŸ™šŸ™

Meet Theresa and Georgia. These two came to NZ for a South Island winter roadie and left as anglers for life. One day of drift fishing turned into two… and by the end of day two, trout tattoos…… it’s a slippery slope out there folks. šŸ˜‚ šŸŽ£ šŸ™Œ

Throwback to that time and I thought we died and went to heaven but it turns out it was just French Polynesia.

Been feeling pretty inspired to get back to the tropics but the reality is it was 10 degrees and raining in Central Otago today so these photos will just have to do for now. šŸŒ§ļøšŸŒ“ 🐠
