On Tuesday 2 September, I'll be presenting a two-part talk on the Southern Lights as part of the Solar Tsunamis – Parawhenua Kōmaru exhibition at Tūranga, Cathedral Square, Christchurch.

I'll be sharing my personal journey through photos and tales of photographing the aurora over the past decade. Following a brief interval, I'll then present a “how to” session on photographing the Aurora Australis. This session covers an introduction to apps useful to tracking space weather as well as basic camera settings (including for smartphones) and photography techniques for capturing your own images.

This talk is free to attend, but you still need to register for a ticket at: https://christchurch.bibliocommons.com/events/6893e895a7509679ad658e32

There will also be a field trip the following night at Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere. Details: https://christchurch.bibliocommons.com/events/6893e95a06322f7aad72b9ac

Winter has well and truly arrived in the Mackenzie Country setting the scene for some fabulous astrophotography (and some daytime stuff too!) in the coming months. I'm looking forward to more moments like this to discover, it really does help recharge the ol' batteries when they're feeling a tad low.

Dreamy light this morning as the fog clears and the mist weaves across the hills. I ended up spending an hour, going no more than a hundred metres or so, just exploring the changing conditions on the far side of the Wairepo Arm, Twizel.

No workshops this weekend as I'll be at The Christchurch Art Show. Here's a sneak peek at one of my new works being released at the show. 'Fire and Ice' was photographed in sub-zero temps last winter following a decent snowfall through Aoraki Mount Cook National Park. A colourful display of airglow brings warmth to the scene and serves as a reminder of the importance in protecting our dark skies.

You can learn how to photograph scenes like this by attending one of our astrophotography workshops. Check out earthskyspace.nz for available dates.

If you're in Christchurch this weekend, please do come along and support the artists, there's some 200 of us including a number of photographers!

Making the most of clear skies and calm conditions on a spectacular autumn evening under the stars. The rising Milky Way dominates the left of the scene with a faint display of the Aurora Australis and the Small Magellanic Cloud to the right. The sky is awash with green airglow - a naturally occurring process that takes place in Earth's upper atmosphere.

Human night vision isn't well adapted to detecting faint colour at night, but a camera sensor is able to capture all that detail to be teased out during post-processing. Additional flexibility in post-processing comes from capturing the sky using a star-tracker - a device that allows the camera to follow the motion of the stars during extended exposures.

Image details:
Foreground: Stack of 4, 15mm, 60s, f/2.8, ISO 1600.
Sky: Stack of 4, 14 mm, 60s (tracked), f/2.8, ISO 1600.

Time's running out to secure your place on our Mackenzie Country Autumn Workshop. Enjoy this 4-day/3-night workshop exploring the rich colours of autumn through the lens of your camera. Whether it's grand scenes or intimate views of the landscape, there's always something to photograph.

You'll learn how to evaluate a scene and look for the stories that you want to tell with your camera. Composition can be overwhelming for some so we'll take the time to explore options for placing the elements within the scene - like this view using trees as a natural frame to guide our eye towards the plumes of toetoe and the calm reflections of the pond beyond.

Workshop Dates: 18-21 April 2025 (Easter Weekend)

Today the Sun crosses the equator on it's journey north marking the Autumn Equinox for us here in the Southern Hemisphere and the start of autumn according to the astronomical calendar.

A joy for southern stargazers as our nights grow longer, and cooler, affording some of the best stargazing and astrophotography this side of the Milky Way.

It's also a great time of year for aurorae with Solar Max happening right now and March statistically being the best month for the number of aurorae that occur. This photo was captured last night on the border of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve

With our first photography workshop just around the corner, will we be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Southern Lights? Who knows, but it will be a fun-filled learning adventure whatever the sky delivers. Want to join us? Find out more at www.earthskyspace.nz
