The night skies in Lake Tekapo / Takapō never disappoint.

A magical aurora lighting up the skies above the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd, surrounded by the beauty of the Mackenzie Region. One of New Zealand’s most unforgettable stargazing moments.

The History of Stargazing in the Mackenzie Basin.
Long before the region was known as the "Mackenzie Basin," it was a vital part of the seasonal landscape for Māori.

For Ngāi Tahu, the stars were more than just beautiful lights; they were a celestial calendar and a navigation system.

Today, the Mackenzie Basin isn't just a place for scientists; it's a place for everyone to reconnect with the universe.

Are you planning a visit to Tekapo soon to see the stars for yourself?

Home to the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve - the world’s largest Gold-Tier Dark Sky Reserve. Lake Tekapo / Takapō is one of the best stargazing destinations in New Zealand and the world. 🌌✨

Here, protecting the night sky is part of everyday life. You’ll notice fully shielded streetlights and strict lighting controls designed to eliminate light pollution and preserve the natural darkness.

These efforts mean clearer skies, brighter stars, and some of the most incredible astronomical viewing conditions in the Southern Hemisphere. 🏔️🔭

Some moments find you when you least expect them 💫

"On the flight over, I had a passing thought… imagine if I saw the aurora over Lake Tekapo. I’ve always dreamed of it, but quickly brushed it off - too rare, too much moonlight… not a chance. Then, on a last-minute stargazing experience at the summit, it happened. The aurora appeared. Alongside it — Jupiter and its four moons, Omega Centauri (a 10-million star cluster), and the Southern Cross shining overhead. Feeling incredibly lucky 🥹✨"

The Mackenzie Basin is one of the few places on Earth where you can see the sky as our ancestors did.

This isn't an accident; it’s the result of decades of strict protection.

1. Shielded Lighting
If you walk through Takapō (Tekapo) at night, you’ll notice the streetlights look different. They are fully shielded, meaning the light is pointed strictly downward at the ground where it’s needed, rather than spilling upward or sideways into the atmosphere.

2. The Dark Sky Zone
The Mackenzie District has specific lighting ordinances written into its local laws. These regulations control everything from the type of bulbs businesses can use to the hours that decorative lighting can be switched on.

3. "Gold Status" Protection
Because of these efforts, the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve was awarded Gold Status. This is the highest possible rating, acknowledging that the sky is almost perfectly preserved from man-made light.
