A once in 170,000 year visitor captured above Aoraki Mackenzie ✨☄️

These incredible images taken from Mt John Observatory feature comet C/2025 R3, a rare long period comet currently travelling through the inner Solar System. After this journey past Earth, it is not expected to return for around 170,000 years.

Its glowing tail of gas and dust, shaped by solar wind, created an unforgettable scene as it appeared to pass through the Witch Head Nebula.

A special moment in our southern skies, beautifully captured by 📷
