Broomsticksnz is an ecotourist destination for Traveller's, Backpackers,Pedal Pushers and those who like to travel off the beaten track. Located on the east coast of the North Island, within easy driving distance of Auckland and minutes from good surfing, it is a secluded gem for those seeking privacy while they relax, explore and have fun on holiday. It's camping with 21st Century technology. Spe

cific areas can be reserved for group use ... such as Paintball Weekend Warrior camping trips or float your own horse in for a weekends ride on the beach ... just let us know and we'll try to match a chunk of land to your needs. Yeah, you read that right....a chunk of land. You can reserve a chunk to pitch a tent on and play paintball over a lot of terrain, for overnight grazing of your horse, or just because there's a lot of people and you want to all camp together.

Planting is progressing at Broomsticks...unfortunately updates have been delayed due to someone impersonating Broomsticksnz online using various email accounts. Never fear, I will hunt down those behind these nefarious deed's and seriously electronically sodomise their hard drive.
*raises eyebrow and looks across the keyboard* ... at Broomsticks we pride ourselves on being upfront, look you in the eye and give a firm handshake. If something needs to be said, we are not backwards in letting rip and speaking our minds.
Should any further comments or postings be sent to friends, neighbors or business aquaintances pretending to be from Broomsticks, without hestitation I will arrive at your location and insert my No.9 Gumboot firmly up your arse.

Working hard getting things ready for the next stage of the land blessing. Searching for greenstone (NZ Jade) that reflects the cultural intentions for the land, sourcing native seedlings for transplanting and researching ways of ensuring the land remains as open space for future generations to enjoy.
As soon as the land blessing is complete, Broomsticks Base Camp can open for helpx and working holiday exchange helpers to stay.

The Western Boundary is currently being planted.
The 1st row is 200 shrub willow and lombardy poplar. Both drink a considerable amount of water and are wonderful for getting swampy peat land ready for reforrestation of a natural wetland habitat. Their roots are wide spread and act as an anchor for larger trees, helping to prevent storm winds from toppling them. Lombary Poplar has huge heart shaped leaves and sheds leaves during Autumn...helping to raise soil fertility naturally.
The 2nd row is 50 slow growing Rimu and Totara trees. Both grow to over 35 metres and take up to 100 years to mature. Very beautiful, majestic trees.
The 3rd row is 48 Ponga, a fern native to New Zealand, it's the national logo and it's reasonably quick growing.
Anyone who'd like to help with the tree planting contact me at [email protected]. Awesome campfire coffee, midnight fishing at one of the best ocean fishing spots on the coast and a fun day out in exchange.

Base Camp is steadily being set up and will be operational in time for when the rocks from Ireland arrive, for the next phase of the land blessing. A variety of solar lights for the camp site are being tested... each expedition onto the land taking in new tools and equipment to test, in preparation of opening Broomsticks up for visitors. There's a variety of cool projects to get done this Summer... weekend volunteers are always welcome. Weaving and shaping over an acre of Wisteria into living walls and domes is one of the projects for this Summer.

The western boundary of the main garden area has been bulldozed clear of undergrowth and although a nice trail to wander along ... it's being replanted. This weekend hundreds of willow and poplar cuttings were planted down the middle of the trail and in time, they will grow into a solid wall of trees... a living boundary more beautiful than a post and wire fence line. It was a great weekend for being outdoors and camping under the stars, while getting some gardening done!!

Land Blessing Update:
During December 2015, the first stage of the land blessing was started by locating the four boundaries of the home garden and placing snow quartz there. The next expedition into Broomsticks is to locate the semi island by the main pond channel and clear a small area for placing the central snow quartz.
Because the perimeter of both ponds and the connecting channel is overgrown with shoulder high ferns, bracken and flax, a small inflatable dinghy is needed to explore and locate the semi island.
*Feeling like Dr Livingstone exploring a wild, untamed garden jungle.*

The first round of crystals, snow quartz that I hiked a mile above sea level to find, were placed at the four boundaries of the main garden area. The gardens a little bit overgrown... impossible to walk around the perimeter...so I set up camp and ventured out to each boundary point from there.
Now that I've returned to the land arrangements can be made for the rocks from County Clare, Ireland, to be shipped over...and I'm looking forward to the expedition onto the land to place them as bonfires and a spit roast will be involved for that occassion.

The land blessing has started and preparations are underway for opening Broomsticks for visiting backpackers, walkers and tourists. The area reserved for eco camping is stunning...grapevines bearing fruit flow at waist height covering all in their path. Wisteria covers acres, flowing up and over huge trees and the orchard is bursting with peaches, apples, feijoas, guava's and locquat trees. Pics will be posted of the land blessing ceremony and it's anticipated Broomsticks gates will be thrown open late Jan. Wishing one and all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year.

The driveway is a mile long and for the most part driveable .. if you're driving a tractor. I prefer to drive it flat tack, skidding sideways around corners and airborne on the straights... so I buy a 'terminal car' strip it down and use it to navigate the drive...saving any decent vehicle from having to drive in.
Sighs..times have changed, civilisation has crept closer and I now have some fancy billionaire members only golf club on the other side of the boundary fence. Apart from having to relinquish the claim to being 'the most awesomely worst driveway in Mangawhai' , I now need to move the longdrop as it overlooks the 18th hole....chuckles...and that wouldn't do.

*grins* ... BUT before the driveway is made 'less challenging' it needs to be navigated and driven on to ensure it can be easily navigated by a tractor pulling a trailer or a semi truck delivering building supplies. Times are hard, money is tight...instead of risking scraping an expensive piece of equipment, it makes sense to buy a $200 junker from the scrap yard, Mad Max style strip it down so it's light enough to push out of the mud if it gets stuck and just go for it. If the driveway is wide enough for a car to skid sideways around the bends, then it's wide enough for a tractor I reckon.

So friends and neighbours have been invited to grab a wreck and get ready for the driving challenge of a lifetime.
Vehicles that don't survive the driveway may be blasted at with shotguns, before being buried somewhere on the land.

First load of gear and equipment ready to go is for the kitchen.
The Broomsticks Base Camp Kitchen has griddles and cauldrons dating from 1890 to 2010 ... it's a nice feeling cooking on a griddle that generations before have cooked on.
The base camp kitchen is also stocked with the latest technology, using thermoelectric power to charge electronic gear via a USB port. With all the accessories for gas bbq and spit roasting, the base camp kitchen is going to turn out some fine feasts.

Was asked why I'm not getting the local parish priest to do the land blessing.
I'm not for two reasons:
1.) The local parish priest advised the church does not conduct land blessings and referred my enquiry to tribal elders, who advised they do not discuss such things with pakeha (of European descent)
2.) The local parish priest is concerned his presence at the land blessing might be considered offensive by his Maori parishioners.

Strange how catholic priests around the world not only do land blessings, they also bless those who work on the land, the animals and the seasons...yet in NZ a parish priest is unable to do so because some of his parishioners might be offended that a white pakeha priest is doing the ceremony instead of a tribal elder.???

*shrugs... fine by me. Never had much tolerance for priests.
