Unmatched morning views 👏 and a campsite review.

This is Crown Range summit car park and it’s one of the few free freedom camping spots near (and that’s generous) Queenstown.

About 30 minutes from the airport, it has lots of space to park up and the most insane views to wake up to!

You just need to have a self contained van and you’re all good to park up for the night. A good place to stop if you took a few pit stops on your drive to Queenstown and got in late and need someplace low maintenance to crash.

Downsides… it can get windy, and with the wind and being on a summit, it also gets cold (not a problem for the biggest one we stayed toasty warm). There’s also No toilets and no bins so everything you come in with leaves with you.

Other than that, it’s a safe and beautiful spot, with lots of room and flat ground on the summit side of the carpark that will have you in awe as you sip your morning coffee!

I spy two big little campers hanging out in the parking lot! 👯‍♀️

Hands up if, while out on your big little road trip, you wound up playing a game of I spy trying to spot other BLC vans or waving to them in passing like your long lost siblings 🙋😂

So why would you actually pick to rent a smaller van over a bigger one? Let’s talk about it 👇

The Little One does exactly what you need, without dragging anything extra along for the ride.

It fits everywhere you could possibly want to go. Tight DOC camps, beach carparks, that aesthetic little spot tucked under a tree by the river. It’s effortless to manoeuvre in and out of tight spots without needing to do a 3 point turn 👏

It’s the easiest to drive. You’re not constantly aware you’re in a big vehicle. No need for reverse mirrors, you can just turn ya head! If you drive a car this will feel close to normal, which means you relax into the trip way quicker 😌

Fuel doesn’t chew through your budget. Which right now is HUGE! It’s more fuel efficient than its other 2 BLC siblings, takes 91 which will save you big time if your planning to put lots of kms down 🙏

If your trip is built around hikes, swims, and being out in nature most of the day… this is the better option. You’re not travelling to sit inside a van. You’re out walking tracks, chasing waterfalls, finding quiet spots. The Little One is your base, not the main event.

It’s budget friendly! It’s easier on mileage. And Is the most affordable of the BLC trinity. If you want to get access to the places public transport won’t take you (which in nz is everywhere) this is your best bet. For the same cost of a rental car you also get accommodation meaning if you just want a reliable and secure place to get from a to b, store your stuff and have a place to sleep, the little one will be the best bang for your buck.

You’re still fully self-contained with a Queen Bed. Stacked Kitchen. Storage. Meaning you also gain access to freedom camping spots and all the epic campgrounds. You’re not giving anything up that matters. And you’re not paying for anything you won’t use.

This is the one you book when you want to experience nature not just visit it. When you want to get back to the simple things without sacrificing some basic comforts.

Matariki is a beautiful time to connect with nature, your people, to remember and reflect and to celebrate with those close to you.

We will always love cruising someplace to gaze the stars, share food and warn the belly with hot tea or chai or a cheeky mulled wine.

If you want a last minute long weekend plan here one that never misses.

But wherever you go this matariki we just wanna take some time reflect on how epic it’s been to be apart of your adventures over the years.

And How grateful we are to have folks like you travel with us… where it’s totally normal to wave at each other in our Big Little campers as we drive by in passing, or spike up a convo in the parking lot or park up next to each other in the campsite and for it to feel so much like whanau, family. We hear stories like this all the time and experience it ourselves when we head out on the road.

As a small business who has always prioritised a sense of found family and connection it makes us feel so grateful to see it play out in real life out on the road. And we just wanna share how grateful we are to have you part of our Big Little Fam 🥹

Have an epic matariki campers!

Save this for your New Zealand van roady! 🌷🚐🏔️

New Zealand is filled to the brim with so many beautiful campgrounds that are FREE or low cost.

Staying at a doc site and paying the small fee helps to support New Zealand’s wildlife and national parks/reserves. It’s how you can travel on a budget whilst still supporting the country you are came to visit

Mix them in with a few freedom camping spots and some paid campsites where you can shower and power up your van, and you’ll be able to explore so many beautiful corners of New Zealand even on a budget!

Here’s a few free or low cost sites that we love (this list is always growing) check our latest blog post on our website for more spots you’ll want to save and to get some pro tips of self contained freedom camping 💌
