Some of the best campsites in the South Island that feel like freedom (because they’re free) 🚐

Wake up beside Lake Pukaki, park behind the dunes on the wild West Coast, sleep by the water at Colac Bay or find a quiet spot tucked into the mountains at Hakatere.

Free camping is still one of the best ways to see the South Island, it just helps to know where to go.

We’ve rounded up 12 of our favourite free camping spots, from Canterbury right down to the Catlins and back up the West Coast.

14 weeks until New Zealand looks like this 🪻🪻🪻and here is our guide to making the most of New Zealand Bloom season

Save this for your South Island road trip 🌸🚐

Every spring and into summer, parts of the South Island turn pink, purple and lilac as lupins pop up along roadsides, riverbeds and lake shores. If catching them in bloom is on your NZ road trip list, here’s how to make the most of it:

🌸 Time it right
Lupins generally start flowering from mid-November, with the best displays usually around late November through December. Exactly when they peak depends on the weather and where you’re travelling.

But nature doesn’t follow a calendar and with a strong El Niño influencing NZ’s spring weather this year, bloom timing could vary. If you’re travelling specifically for the lupins, keep your dates flexible and check current conditions before you go.

📍 Head south
The Mackenzie Basin is lupin territory. Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and the roads towards Aoraki/Mt Cook are some of the most iconic spots, with plenty appearing around Queenstown and Wānaka too.

🚐 Make it a road trip
Rather than racing from one famous lupin spot to another, give yourself a few days to explore. Christchurch → Tekapo → Pukaki → Aoraki/Mt Cook makes a pretty hard-to-beat spring campervan route. And Traveling via campervan will put you right in the middle of the bloom!

🌞 Go early or Late
Sunrise and the last couple of hours before sunset = softer light, fewer people and a much nicer time wandering around with your camera to capture all the variations of colour.

🌱 Look, don’t pick
Russell lupins might look beautiful, but they’re an introduced species and can impact braided river ecosystems. Enjoy the blooms where you find them, stick to tracks and avoid picking or spreading seeds.

And our biggest tip? Give yourself some flexibility, keep an eye out as you travel, half the fun is finding an unexpected patch somewhere along the way.

Ahhhh yes! nothing beats waking up somewhere you didn’t have to book months in advance 😌

A beach on your doorstep. Some sheep roaming in the paddock next door. A lake a few steps from the van. Coffee with a view that you didn’t have to pay extra for.

The North Island often gets entirely skipped or lazily brushed over due to its more dramatic and popular sibling down South, but it has a vibe of its own that will change you forever if you give it the time and do right by it. Not to mention, it has some of our most favourite freedom camping spots, and is actually more accessible to freedom camp than the South Island with how many options you have. You just need to know where to find them … and that’s where we come in!
