Kia ora everyone,

Hands up who’s missing our beautiful hot pools?

We are just checking in to say, hello and let you know while we don’t have much news right now, we do want to update you as much as we can.

Right now, our maunga and the surrounding area, including the Mount Hot Pools are still closed. Works are ongoing by geo-tech experts to assess the risk of future landslides and while that’s happening, our crew is also busy behind the scenes, assessing our venue and site to get a clear picture of the damage and understand what we do next.

We’re just as keen as you are to see the Mount Hot Pools back open again – if and when it is safe to do so. The safety of our staff and customers, workers, and our community is the priority. Our thoughts are still with those families affected by the landslides just a few short months ago.

We cannot thank you enough for your ongoing support, and as always, we will be in touch as soon as we can with any updates.

If you want more details or have questions, please head to the council website here: https://www.tauranga.govt.nz/council/mauao-landslide/

Mount Maunganui - Mauao - will reopen.

I was very pleased to see Mayor Mahe Drysdale announce yesterday that Tauranga City Council and the Mauao Trust are working to restore access. This must happen. The community needs information and it is good to have it forthcoming. Tom Rutherford MP for Bay of Plenty and I have been pushing this for a while, in response to many of the concerns we field from Tauranga and Mount locals.

Safety is a priority and there is much work to do. It will be easier to get to the summit than around the base track, which has suffered significant damage.

The community and local businesses are doing it tough. Local spending in the Mount is down 16% year on year for February. For many, this will put employees out of work and businesses under. Please continue to get down there and support them. I want to thank Jay and the team at Mount Mainstreet for all they are doing to get people to the Mount and support local businesses.

Thank you TCC for your commitment to provide greater clarity and certainty around public access and it is excellent to hear they are committed to reopening Mount Maunganui - Mauao as quickly and as safely as possible.

God bless the victims and their families of this terrible tragedy and let's rebuild together.
