Did you know? The volcanic activity at Whakaari/White Island is caused by magma a few kilometres underground (2 to 9km). When this magma moves to a shallower depth, the volcanic activity increases.
The island and the sea stacks are the peaks of a much larger submarine volcano. The main island is 3km long above water but the volcano is 18km wide under sea level!Â
