What You’ll See on the Tongariro Crossing: 👀

Expect volcanic terrain, colourful crater lakes, geothermal activity, and sweeping alpine views. The trail is 19.4 km and weather can change quickly - so be prepared!

🔹 Mangatepopo Valley: Volcanic landscape and views of Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe.
🔹 Soda Springs & Devil’s Staircase: Waterfall and a steep climb with expanding views.
🔹 South Crater: Flat desert-like basin beneath Mount Doom (Ngauruhoe).
🔹 Red Crater: The trail’s highest point with vivid red rock and epic views.
🔹 Emerald Lakes: Stunning, mineral-coloured lakes with a sulfur smell.
🔹 Blue Lake: Sacred cobalt lake - no swimming allowed!
🔹 Descent to Ketetahi: Steam vents, tussock fields, and native forest with views of Lake Taupō.

In and around Whakapapa Village there is a range of short walking tracks from 20 minutes, to longer tracks up to 6 hours. 🥾

🔸 Short Walks:
Whakapapa Nature Walk – 15 minute loop track

🔸 Longer Walks:
Ridge Track – 30-40 minutes return
Taranaki Falls – 2 hours return
Whakapapanui Track – 2 hours return
Silica Rapids – 2.5 hours return
Tama Lakes – 5-6 hours return

🔸 Advanced Track:
Whakapapaiti Valley – 4-5 hours return

Whakapapa Ski Area has spectacular scenery 🏔️ which can be accessed via the Sky Waka gondola (charges apply).

We have 3 shuttles 🚌 to Whakapapa Village each day, with 2 return times. So you have Full Day or Part Day options available.
