Not the vague β€œ$3-5k” answer.
The actual line-by-line math.

Everyone asks me the same thing: "What does 2 weeks in New Zealand actually cost?"

The honest answer is β€” it depends way more on your choices than most budget guides admit. Flights, rental car vs campervan, accommodation type, how many activities you stack in... they all swing the number by thousands.

So I sat down and did the real math. Not a rough guess β€” an actual line-by-line breakdown of what a realistic 2-week NZ trip costs in 2026, where people overspend without noticing, and where you can save without cutting the good stuff.

If you're planning a trip and want real numbers instead of vague ranges, this one's for you.

Roy's Peak is the most photographed hike in New Zealand. It's also closed for six weeks of the year and nobody seems to mention it.

Every October through to 10 November, the track shuts for lambing. If you've built your South Island itinerary around that one photo β€” the ridgeline, the fence post, the lake behind you β€” and you're arriving in October, you're not getting it.

Here's the part that matters even when it is open. It's six hours return, 16km, and on a good summer morning you'll queue 30 to 40 minutes at the top. Not for the view. For the photo. The same photo, from the same spot, that everyone in the line ahead of you is waiting for.

Ten minutes up the road at Diamond Lakes is another cool walk with stunning views over Lake Wanka. Same lake country. Same ridgeline drama. A fraction of the people, and open all year.

I'm not telling you to skip Roy's. I'm telling you to know what you're paying for it β€” and to have a plan if you're here in October.
