There’s a reason we’re happy to be out before sunrise.

The first and last hours of the day are some of the most rewarding times to be on safari. Temperatures are cooler, wildlife is often more active, and the bush has a completely different feel before the heat of the day sets in.

For photographers, there’s the added bonus of that beautiful low light. It catches the dust, softens the landscape and can turn even the simplest sighting into something worth reaching for the camera for.

But you don’t need to be a photographer to appreciate it. There’s something about being out in the bush as the sun comes up, or watching the last light disappear at the end of a day, that becomes a very memorable part of safari.

Golden hour doesn’t last long. Perhaps that’s part of what makes it so good.

For elephants, water is about far more than simply having a drink.

Rivers and permanent water sources play an important role in their daily lives. They’re places to drink, cool down, bathe and socialise, and for younger elephants, another environment in which to learn from the herd.

Nigel filmed this family crossing the Rufiji River in Nyerere National Park in July. During the dry season, water becomes increasingly important as the surrounding landscape dries out, bringing elephants and other wildlife towards the river and its surrounding waterways.

The Rufiji is a huge part of what makes Nyerere such an interesting place to explore. It shapes the landscape, supports an extraordinary variety of wildlife, and gives you a very different safari experience from Tanzania’s more open plains.

One of the best parts of our job is finding places we’d happily recommend to our own friends and family.

Nigel recently spent a few days at Usangu Expedition Camp in the southern reaches of Ruaha National Park, and came away genuinely impressed.

Beautifully designed without feeling overdone, the camp strikes a wonderful balance between comfort and a genuine sense of wilderness. Add warm hospitality, excellent guiding and a landscape that feels truly remote, and it becomes a very easy place to enjoy.

Of course, the wildlife helps too. Usangu is home to healthy populations of elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, wild dog and a remarkable variety of birdlife, all experienced with very few other vehicles around.

It’s not a camp that will suit every traveller, and that’s exactly the point. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all safaris. But for those looking for a more remote, immersive experience in one of Tanzania’s great wilderness areas, Usangu Expedition Camp is a place we’d be very happy to recommend.

Watching a leopard hunt is often a lesson in patience.

This young male spent several minutes watching the baboons before slowly working his way through the long grass, trying to get close enough without being noticed.

The baboons, meanwhile, were scrambling up the palms and keeping a close eye on every movement below.

The outcome isn’t always what makes the sighting memorable. Sometimes it’s simply watching the strategy unfold. How a leopard uses cover, waits for the right opportunity, and constantly adjusts to what the animals around it are doing.

This was one of those sightings from Ruaha National Park that stayed with Nigel long after the sun had gone down.

Safari isn’t only about wildlife.

Some of the most memorable moments come from stepping away from the game drive and experiencing another side of the places you’re travelling through.

At Lake Eyasi, that means spending a night in a fly camp, waking to sunrise over the lake, and taking time to visit the Hadza community. It’s a chance to learn, listen and gain a deeper appreciation for one of Tanzania’s oldest living cultures.

It’s not an experience we’d include on every itinerary, but for travellers looking to connect more deeply with the country, it can become one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.

For many people, it’s an experience that reshapes the way they think about Tanzania.
