Tieke - North Island saddleback πŸ¦β€β¬›β

This unique and endangered species has been reunited with our beautiful islands of Ipipiri since it was reintroduced in 2015, thanks to the efforts of the local conservation organization, Project Island Song. A total of 80 birds were set free on Moturua and Urupukapuka islands, and since their release, the population continues to flourish on these pest-free islands, their distinctive calls greeting us as we sail into the bays!

A portion of the Island Hopper Cruise ticket proceeds is allocated to Project Island Song, playing a vital role in safeguarding our taonga species.

Project Island Song is engaged in remarkable work, fostering a thriving ecosystem that benefits both our wildlife and the community. 🫢

πŸŒΏπŸŽ‰ CELEBRATING CONSERVATION WEEK! πŸŽ‰πŸŒΏ

We’re excited to share this fantastic article from Project Island Song highlighting how we’re supporting their incredible conservation efforts.

Founded 20 years ago by a passionate group of conservation minded locals with a vision to "bring back the birdsong to the Bay of Islands," Project Island Song has achieved remarkable success. Their work includes predator eradication, invasive plant removal, habitat restoration, and species translocations, creating a stunning sanctuary on a group of 7 islands in the Eastern Bay of Islands.

When we started our business in the Bay of Islands in 2016, we were so inspired by their dedication and felt like it really fitted our values so we wanted to contribute. We began by donating a portion of our ticket sales and went on to become more involved, you could say slightly obsessed! During the winter season, we made good use our boat to transport volunteers for crucial tasks like species monitoring, work with Auckland Zoo, and the incredible species translocations. We were able to bring community members along to witness the incredible releases of endangered species.

Seeing the profound impact on those who experience this work firsthand is truly inspiring.

Thank you to our amazing guests for your support! 🌟 Your contributions not only enhance your own cruise experience but also play a crucial role in conservation and strengthen the community of the Bay of Islands. Through our cruises, we’re proud to share the inspiring story of Project Island Song, educate others about preserving our unique wildlife sanctuary, and encourage everyone to appreciate New Zealand’s stunning birdlife! πŸ¦œπŸ’š

A heartfelt thank you to the members and volunteers of Project Island Song, the Guardians of the Bay of Islands, Te Rawhiti Hapu, Department of Conservation and all the extraordinary people who we have met, we are deeply grateful to be part of the journey with you. Aroha nui.

We had our first charter on Moonwalker our new catamaran, and what a fab day it was!

Perfect conditions with flat water, 10-15 knots of breeze, blue skies and a fun bunch of guests onboard from Australia, UK, Czech Republic & Honolulu. Couldn't have been better for our maiden charter⛡️

The Tieke (saddleback) and Kakariki (red crowned parakeet) were calling as we entered the bay at Moturua Island for our lunchtime stopover, the perfect welome after our winter of boat maintenance and refits!

A picnic lunch and exploration was the order of the day.

We had one brave swimmer for a fresh spring swim, our little baby girl Hazel (10 months old) nobody else was brave enough, but then again nobody else is small enough to immerse in the warm shallow waters quite the same 😍 and the rest enjoyed a hike to capture views of the Bay of Islands, and a glimpse of some of our beautiful endangered bird species on the predator free island.

A beautiful down wind run home had us all grinning, with plenty of convo around the cockpit with the captain and who can resist a turn at the helm!

A classic Bay of Islands sailing day.

Happy days for the Barefoot Crew and our new vessel Moonwalker!

Guess who just joined the Barefoot Crew? πŸ‘£β›΅οΈ
After a loooong wait and a whole lot of dreaming and determination, we finally got our hands on the incredible Moonwalker! She's been on our radar for a whole decade, and now she's officially part of the Barefoot Crew. After an intensive winter refit thanks to Luke the legend πŸ’ͺ, and a tonne of paperwork πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«she now meets Maritime New Zealand's safety standards for commercial operations πŸ₯‚

A huge shout out to the crew for trusting us with their baby πŸ™ it was hard for the family to part with Moonwalker, but she is in great hands with the Barefoot family, and ready to showcase the beautiful Bay of Islands and share in the delight of sailing to many people from around the world!

And of course this couldn't have been done without our fabulous team of tradies in the Bay of Islands who helped make this possible in a short time frame (we're talking an intense amount of work). The Bay of Islands Boat Yard for such superb facilities, and our superstar Surveyor who was just a delight to work with making an enormous job seem effortless!

Last but not least the Grandparents on call swooping in to lend a helping hand with the little miss when the naps just wouldn't cut it!

We are so blessed!

We are so excited!

We are so tired!

Thanks everyone!
