As the day begins and light settles across the landscapes we’re lucky to share, we take a moment to reflect on the strength, resilience, and sacrifice of those who came before us.

At Wilderness Guides, we’re grateful to explore and share these places, a freedom that was hard won.

This ANZAC Day, we honour those who served, those who fell, and the legacy they leave behind.

Lest we forget.

🌊 Seaweek Spotlight: New Zealand Fur Seal / Kekeno 🦭✨

While gliding through the Marlborough Sounds, it’s not unusual for us to spot one of our favourite locals, the New Zealand fur seal.

Did you know?
🦭 Fur seals can dive over 200 metres deep in search of food.
🦭 They use their long whiskers to detect vibrations and track prey underwater.
🦭 After being hunted to near extinction in the 1800s, their population has steadily recovered thanks to protection and conservation efforts.

Curious and playful, they’re often seen resting on rocks or cruising quietly through sheltered bays.

When we encounter wildlife on our guided kayak trips, we always give them space and observe from a respectful distance. These waters are their home, we’re just lucky enough to visit.

Seaweek is a reminder of how special, and how fragile, these marine ecosystems are. 🌊💙

📸 Captured by one of our guides Helen filmed in accordance with New Zealand’s Marine Mammals Protection Regulations.
