A Day at the Great Wall (Mutianyu) + a Visit to Yanqi Lake

Spent the day exploring the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, and wow — it totally lived up to the hype. This part of the Wall is incredibly scenic, with forest-covered mountains, ancient stone watchtowers, and some seriously steep climbs. You really feel the history under your feet (and in your calves — good luck if you’ve got old knees like me 😥)

We took the cable car up (highly recommend), and once you’re on the Wall, the views are next-level. It winds endlessly over the hills like something out of a movie. Be warned - It does get crowded, especially mid-day, but if you walk a little further along the wall, you’ll find quieter spots to take it all in.

In the afternoon, we headed over to Yanqi Lake for a total change of pace. Completely different vibe — peaceful, quiet, and surrounded by mountains. A perfect spot to unwind after the climb.

And here’s something cool: if you’re into skiing and have never thought of China as a ski destination, this area might surprise you. Just under two hours away is the Yanqing National Alpine Ski Centre — home to the 2022 Winter Olympic alpine events. With serious slopes and dramatic mountain terrain, it’s definitely one to keep on your radar for winter trips.

• Get to the Wall early to beat the crowds.
• Wear good shoes — the steps are no joke!
• Don’t skip Yanqi Lake. It’s a perfect post-Wall chill spot.
• If you’re into winter sports, consider coming back when the mountains are covered in snow.

Landed in Beijing 🇨🇳 after a 14hr flight and went straight into exploring the city’s incredible blend of history and modern reinvention.

First stop: Moshikou Historical and Cultural Block 🏘️
Tucked away in the Shijingshan District, this street was once a key route for merchants and pilgrims during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It’s filled with traditional siheyuan courtyards and historic charm.
The highlight? Fahai Temple, built in 1439 (Ming Dynasty). Hidden in the hills, it’s home to some of China’s most well-preserved Buddhist frescoes—600+ years old and still glowing with color and detail. A true hidden gem.

Then: Shougang Park 🏭→🏀❄️
This former steel mill, once a major source of pollution, has been transformed into a modern public space focused on sustainability. Old blast furnaces and silos have been converted into sports venues, climbing gyms, and creative spaces.
It even hosted the Big Air snowboarding & freestyle skiing events during the 2022 Winter Olympics, marking a bold reuse of industrial heritage for green urban living.

From imperial murals to repurposed steel mills, Beijing is where history meets innovation.

An “elderly aunt” has lost nearly $10,000 trying to rent a Christmas holiday home from a fake Booking.com listing.

Her family are among multiple customers and homeowners who have complained to the Herald about how easy it is to set up fake listings on the popular travel site – and how difficult it is to get them taken down.

“This is a safety issue because we’ve just had someone turn up on our doorstep."
