The Aurora Australis, the Southern Lights, from Ataahua in Queenstown. It was quite a light show over the Southern Alps as a massive Coronal Mass Ejection from the Sun hit the Earth about midnight. K values maxed at 6.7 at around 1-2 am. The shimmering and pulsating rays, and bands of coloured light are hard to describe or capture. But here are a few pics. Timelapse video to follow.
