Important message regarding rubbish and recycling during the COVID-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown.
Keep up to date with the current Waste Management actions from Queenstown Lakes District Council:
🗑 Rubbish and recycling collections will continue as normal, including Assisted Collection Services.
🗑 To ensure facilities do not become overwhelmed, it is important that you don’t change your behaviour – put your bins out when you normally would and continue to place mixed recycling in the yellow bin, glass in the blue bin, and rubbish in the red bin.
🗑 Mixed recycling (yellow bin) will temporarily be going to landfill as the Materials Recovery Facility is closed to protect the staff that sort our recycling by hand. Where possible glass (blue bin) will continue to stored for recycling but this may also need to go to landfill. While it might be tempting to hang onto recycling for future processing, we ask that you don’t as this will overwhelm the Materials Recovery Facility when it opens again.
🗑 Your rubbish must all fit in your wheelie bin, with lids closed flat. Please make sure you don’t overfill your bin as this will impact on collection times and create a risk for the collectors.
🗑 Please take care to place wheelie bins at least 50cm apart and make them as accessible to our trucks as possible to minimise the need for drivers to handle bins.
🗑 Please do not flush wet wipes of any kind down the toilet, this includes products labelled as ‘flushable’ or ‘biodegradable’. These cause blockages in our waste water network.
To help reduce the amount of rubbish and recycling going to landfill during the Covid-19 lockdown period, why not think about doing the following:
♻️ Reduce the amount of packaging you buy wherever possible - embrace that zero waste life!
♻️ Get crafty with recyclables - reusing containers for other purposes around your home including crafts with your kids. YouTube has tons of ideas!
♻️ Avoid the urge to do a thorough spring clean of your house during the lockdown period. This will only create more rubbish and put unnecessary pressure on collectors and facilities.
♻️ Doing some gardening? Why not try home composting your green waste? Dr Compost has lots of resources to get you started: www.wastebusters.co.nz/compost/
♻️ Love food but hate waste? Check out all the top tips and recipes on the Love Food Hate Waste - New Zealand website to help you plan, store and portion to reduce food waste.
