Just 40 minutes drive from Ohakune is the Taranaki Falls loop track, in the Tongariro National Park (access by Skotel in Whakapapa Villlage). The 20m waterfall is breathtaking but the track offers a variety of other scenery as well and is relatively easy - allow 2-3 hours for the walk.

"Maybe not so much 'Don't Miss' as 'Impossible to Miss', this roadside tribute to Ohakune's biggest crop was erected in 1984 and quickly became one of NZ’s most hugged ‘Big Things’. Carrots were first grown in the area during the 1920s by Chinese settlers, who cleared the land by hand and explosives. Ohakune now grows two-thirds of the North Island's total crop.

At 7.5 metres tall, this is a very large model of the tasty orange vegetable and has been installed in the same spot since 1984. The Biggest Vegetable in New Zealand was built for a TV commercial for ANZ Bank and then donated to the town. The area is famed for its farms and carrot production.

The famous giant carrot is joined by some cartoon vegetable friends including a swede, potato, Brussels sprout and parsnip. There is also a fun playground, an assault course for the older kids, mountain biking and walking trails that border the Ohakune Carrot Adventure Park, a place where the whole family will have fun!" Kiwi nearby! This sign is at the bottom of the Ohakune Mountain Road, a couple of minutes away. Let's hope kiwi become more common as efforts to look after them continue.

A 4-day weekend in Ohakune, travelling on the Northern Explorer Train could be just the ticket! (Thursday to Sunday from Auckland/Papakura/Hamilton, and Friday to Monday from Wellington/Paraparaumu/Palmerston North). Back up and running now, and stopping just 5 minutes walk from The Gingerbread House Ohakune with Spa! We're now on summer rates. Bring a bike, hire when you get here, or walk to what you need including restaurants, coffee, shopping, the museum, the Old Coach Road and Tongariro National Park.
