This week is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week. A week to celebrate and practice te Reo Māori.

You'll hear te reo Māori often on our HikingNZ trips and in how we talk about what we do. Here are six words worth knowing before you head out with us. 🌿

Kia ora: hello, thank you, or cheers! Literally meaning "be well," it's one of the most widely used Māori words in everyday New Zealand life, and you'll hear it from us often, from the first hello to the last thank you.

Aotearoa: the Māori name for New Zealand, generally translated as "land of the long white cloud." You'll see us use Aotearoa often, alongside New Zealand, in how we talk about this country we're lucky to call home!

Taonga: treasure. Used for anything precious, whether that's land, a native bird, or a story passed down through generations. Our guides often talk about the landscapes we walk through as taonga, treasures worth protecting.

Kaitiaki: guardian, or protector. A kaitiaki looks after a taonga on behalf of everyone who comes after them. Our guides see themselves as kaitiaki of the trails, and we ask every hiker to walk that way too, leaving each place as they found it.

Mahi: work, or effort. You might hear a guide praise "good mahi" after a tough climb, recognising the effort your small group has put in that day.

Mana: prestige, authority, or spiritual power. Mana can belong to a person, but also to a place. Our guides often speak of the mana of the mountains and forests we walk through, a reminder that these landscapes carry deep meaning long before we arrive and long after we leave.

It's something we hear time and time again.

People join us for the landscapes, but they leave talking about the people they shared them with.

Small groups, shared adventures, and genuine connections have been at the heart of Hiking New Zealand for more than 30 years.

Sometimes, the people you meet become just as memorable as the places you visit.

This Ultimate North Island group was a blast!

Great scenery is basically guaranteed on this trip. What you can't plan for is the laughter, inside jokes, and camaraderie that make a trip so much more memorable than just great scenery! 😁

Tawhai Falls in Tongariro National Park

Okay, who knows what this place is also called?

And more importantly 😉… who knows what it’s famous for, apart from being a pretty cool 'easy to access' waterfall?

Here’s a clue: if you’ve watched the Lord of the Rings, you might recognise it...

We try to avoid politics here at HikingNZ, but there's one annual vote that we New Zealanders take pretty seriously.

New Zealand Bird of the Year!

Last year the New Zealand falcon took it out. Who do you want it to be this year?

Forest and Bird run this fun campaign annually to put our deserving native birds in the spotlight. Did you know around 80 percent of New Zealand birds are considered endangered?

A belief we share with Forest and Bird is that the more people who know about and care for nature, the more people there will be to support conservation initiatives.

A fun twist this year is that your vote for a specific bird is also a 'party vote'. So you're giving love to the shore birds, tree birds, shy birds, floor birds, sea birds, or high birds!

So cast your vote here: https://ap1.hubs.ly/H01lxVN0 and while you're there, learn more about the incredible native birds we love!

P.S. Anyone worldwide can cast their vote, so get involved!

Want to breathe in the fresh air and take in the wild beauty of Fiordland, while enjoying the elevated comforts of private accommodation, outdoor hot tubs, and a scenic flight to finish?

The Hollyford Track is calling your name!
