Two kākāriki karaka 'super parents' are going above and beyond to boost the population of their species!

The Department of Conservation (DOC) recently shared the exciting news that two kākāriki karaka parents, Trixie and Nacho, have produced an incredible 55 chicks between them, including 33 this season alone. Trixie and Nacho are part of a captive breeding programme in Christchurch.

While we love all New Zealand birds, Hiking New Zealand has a soft spot for the critically endangered kākāriki karaka, New Zealand's rarest parrot. Our sister company, Southern Rewilding, has been directly involved in predator control projects that supported the relocation and survival of kākāriki karaka in the Hawdon and Poulter valleys throughout 2021, 2022 and 2023.

The team was proud to assist DOC staff with the successful release of 75 captive-reared birds into the Hawdon Valley and to help monitor sightings of the birds in their new habitat, which had been made safer through ongoing trapping efforts.

We love hearing about conservation wins like this!
