Steeped in history and Māori tradition, Mokoia Island is one of Rotorua’s most sacred places. It is best known as the setting of the legendary love story of Hinemoa and Tūtānekai, where Hinemoa famously swam across Lake Rotorua to be with him.
Not only rich in history — it’s also a safe haven for many of Aotearoa’s native birds. Thanks to ongoing conservation work, species such as tūī, tīeke (saddleback), toutouwai (north island robin) and fantails thrive in the island’s protected forest.
This is just one of the stops on our Jet Boat tours so our guests can get up and close with the natural beauty of the island.
