What does it take to tell a story that still lives in the whenua 140 years later?

Ahead of opening night, share the thinking behind Tērā Te Auahi - a powerful production created to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the Mount Tarawera eruption.

Powerful, moving and deeply rooted in place, Tērā Te Auahi invites us to remember not only the devastation of that night, but the resilience, strength and enduring spirit that followed.

Spend the long weekend with a little royal inspiration 🫅

Rotorua has welcomed members of the Royal Family for generations, with visits often centred on the places that tell the story of our region: manaakitanga, Māori culture, geothermal landscapes, heritage and conservation.

Here’s how to follow in a few royal footsteps 👉

Before the eruption, the area around Mount Tarawera was home to thriving Māori and European communities and one of Aotearoa’s most famous visitor experiences, the Pink and White Terraces.

Then, in 1886, Tarawera erupted. Villages including Te Wairoa were buried, landscapes were transformed and lives were changed forever. Survivors were supported by neighbouring Te Arawa iwi, where whakapapa and manaakitanga helped people rebuild after immense loss.

More than 140 years later, the story of Tarawera is still held in this whenua, in the geothermal landscapes that emerged and in the resilience of the people connected to this place.

A powerful way to understand this history is to visit the Buried Village of Te Wairoa, where you can walk through the excavated village and experience a virtual retelling of the night Tarawera erupted.

Winter changes the way Rotorua feels ☁️

The steam hangs lower, the pace softens, and at , the season adds another layer to the experience.

Grounded in te ao Māori and inspired by the legacy of Ngāti Whakaue, Wai Ariki is more than a place to warm up. It’s an experience shaped by water, whenua and wellbeing - inviting you to slow down, reset and be fully present.

If there’s a time to experience Wai Ariki, winter might just be it 🧖‍♀️🔥
