There are places you visit for the views. Then there are places that tell a story.

Ōkere Falls is both.

Spend your weekend soaring above the Kaituna River, brunching at a local icon, walking along the riverside track alive with the sound of adventure, rafting world-famous rapids, staying lakeside at Lake Rotoiti, and discovering the stories behind landmarks like Tutea Falls and Hinemoa’s Steps.

It’s a place where nature, history and adventure flow side by side.

Before Rotorua became the destination we know today, Te Wairoa was a bustling village and the gateway to the world-famous Pink and White Terraces. Home to the many hapΕ« (sub-tribes) of TΕ«hourangi and Rotorua locals, Te Wairoa was where tourism in Aotearoa, NZ all began.

Sadly, in 1886, Tarawera maunga (Mt Tarawera) erupted causing mass devastation and the loss of lives and changing the entire landscape.

Today, the Buried Village of Te Wairoa stands as one of Rotorua’s most significant heritage sites, preserving the stories, artefacts, and memories of a iwi and community shaped by the Tarawera eruption.

A reminder that every landscape has a story beneath the surface πŸ“œπŸŒ‹
