Always the highlight of our season, and thanks so much to Methven for their continued support of this effort.
Mince, glorious mince – maybe not the prettiest picture but it's a wonderful sight for us in our foodbank freezer. Protein is one of the hardest things for us to source for the people we look after but luckily the deer hunting community have got our back.
We are getting the best wild caught, organic, free range venison mince (go on, let’s say in the world) for our clients thanks to Nigel and Myriam Birt of Alpinus Station and Backcountry New Zealand Hunting and Fishing Guides and the Hunters4Hope team who supply us through the Hope Community Trust.
In both cases, hunters – local and international guests – are honouring their sport by processing surplus venison from the hunts into mince packs for people struggling to feed themselves and their families.
The Birts have been supporting us since 2018 and they have been joined recently by the North Canterbury hunters. The mince helps us feed our men’s and women’s emergency shelter residents, our day programme guests and our foodbank clients. We are also blessed with longstanding support from farmers through the Meet The Need NZ charity.
Sometimes you hear talk about an urban-rural divide but when the mince donations arrive in our freezer what we see is Kiwis helping other Kiwis and it feels like we are all in this together.
We fed about 320 people today and we do that every weekday. Thank you so much to everyone who helps us do that. ❤️
