June 1st marks the first day of winter here in New Zealand and Mother Nature knows it, dropping temperatures across the country. A wonderful way to welcome in winter here is by attending one of the Matariki family-oriented community gatherings which marks the beginning of a new year in the Maori calendar. This occasion set off celebrations all over the country including feasting and festivals, artworks and fire dancing. These gatherings are just what we need as the cold starts to bite.

Observing the rise of Matariki connects us not only with New Zealand's Maori heritage but also with the natural cycles of the seasons. Plus if all of that is a little too culturally correct or New-Age for one's taste it's a fine reason for bonfires and fireworks, music and revelry.

In the Bay of Plenty this year, activities include a dawn trek on Mauao, kite-flying, a feast of Maori cuisine, lectures, exhibitions, at least one marae concert and an upcoming ball.

This is an aspect of Maori culture in which we can all take part, it provides a bright spot in the chill of winter and it adds to the richness of our society

- I am originally from Canada and have lived in both Australia & Vanuatu for most of my adult life before moving to Tauranga here in the beautiful Bay of Plenty. Leon hails from Zambia where he was born but grew up around the Cape in South Africa and has also lived in a few places around the world.
- Leon has a great passion for BMW Adventure bikes and rides as often as time will allow him to. When he’s not riding he works as an IT consultant. I work full time for Bay Audiology as a Customer Care Coordinator and love the opportunity to help people enjoy the experience of better hearing.
- We both love to travel and having an Airbnb allows us to meet wonderful people from all around the world, which is something we truly value and appreciate. They say that travelling is the only thing you buy that makes you richer. Well, we’re pleased to tell you that from our experience it’s so true!
