What makes a good Fiordland guide?

According to our recent guest feedback, it’s much more than knowing the track.

Guests told us they valued guides who explained the local plants, wildlife and history, kept everyone informed, managed the pace of the group and adapted calmly when the weather or someone’s needs changed.

Sometimes it’s helping with gear. Sometimes it’s finding a more comfortable option for tired legs. Often, it’s simply creating a friendly group where solo travellers and couples alike feel welcome.

Question: What happens when the weather changes?

Answer: In Fiordland, changing conditions are part of the experience. Our local guides keep a close eye on the weather, track conditions and the people in their group throughout the day.
Sometimes that means adjusting the pace, adding an extra layer or taking a little more care underfoot. At other times, the safest decision may be to change the plan. The itinerary won’t always proceed exactly as expected, but every decision is made with your safety and enjoyment in mind.

A local guide adds far more to a Fiordland walk than simply showing you the way.
Our guides know when to slow down for a closer look, where the best stories are hiding and which little details are easy to walk past. They also know Fiordland’s changeable conditions, so they can adjust the pace or plan as the day unfolds!

You don’t need to be an experienced tramper to enjoy walking in Fiordland, just good general fitness. General fitness and hiking experience are not quite the same thing.

Good general fitness means you’re comfortable being active for several hours, walking longer distances and managing hills. Specialist hiking experience comes from time spent on uneven tracks, rocky ground, tree roots and steeper sections, often in changeable weather.

Both matter, but the right balance depends on the walk you choose. Some options suit active travellers with limited hiking experience, while others require more confidence on challenging terrain.

We’ll always be honest about what each walk involves. If you’re unsure which option best suits your fitness and experience, ask our local team. We’re happy to help you make the right choice.

Day two of our Great Walk Package takes you to the Milford Track, approaching it from Milford Sound.

A short boat ride carries us across to Sandfly Point, where we join the final section of the track. We walk through lush native forest beside the Arthur River, with mountain views appearing through the trees along the way.

At Giant Gate Falls, there’s time to enjoy a well-earned cuppa before retracing our steps. Back at Milford Sound, the day finishes with an afternoon cruise beneath the towering peaks and waterfalls.

A rewarding combination of walking and cruising, without the heavy overnight pack or hut stays. Afterwards, we return to Te Anau for a hot shower and comfortable bed before the next Great Walk adventure.

🥾 Three Great Walks. Three very different days.

Our Fiordland Great Walk Package lets you experience selected sections of the Kepler, Milford and Routeburn Tracks. You won’t walk the complete tracks. Instead, you’ll enjoy three carefully chosen day walks, returning to your Te Anau accommodation each evening.

🌿 Kepler Track, two options
Choose the jet boat and walk option for a gentler day through native forest. Or take the heli-hike option for an alpine experience, beginning with a scenic helicopter flight before walking down through changing landscapes.

💧 Milford Track
Classic Fiordland rainforest, clear rivers and waterfalls, with a walk to Giant Gate Falls. This is the day when a waterproof jacket and spare footwear often earn their place in your bag.

⛰️ Routeburn Track
A more alpine feel, with mountain scenery. The terrain is a little more demanding, making this a rewarding final walk.

Together, the three days show just how varied Fiordland can be. You’ll walk with a local guide, carry only a day pack and have transport, lunches and accommodation (if this option chosen) taken care of.
