For years New Zealand's legacy media painted the Māori members of this land occupation in the70s as radical or activists. Both descriptors I came, as a young child, to mistakenly view as a denigrating but fitting one. Little did I know the truth that sat behind the whenua (land). Little did I know those "radicals" began to pave the way to be the voice of many. Those of us either too meek, too colonised or too ignorant to question that we may have been wronged in matters pertaining to our land to which we possess an inherent and lasting connection.
Today we salute you. For your foresight. For your resilience. For your strength.
E ngā manu taikō, e rere kau ana te mihi maioha ki a koutou. Kua kaha ake te manawanui o te iwi Māori! Mauri ora.
