This time of year has become one of the busiest and most beautiful for our whānau. From Kura and Kōhanga Reo events to kai tahi, hautapu, karakia to the stars, amazing laser shows and light trails… Matariki is everywhere, and we love it 🌌🌟

It makes so much sense to celebrate the Māori New Year. It feels authentic a time to come together, give thanks for what we have, remember those we’ve lost, and dream about the future.

Bedtime reading has always been a non-negotiable in our house — a quiet moment at the end of the day to snuggle up with my tamariki, share stories, and discover new worlds together.

At first, I did it to nurture their love of books — to build their vocabulary, spark their imaginations, and open their hearts to different perspectives.

But what I didn’t realise back then, was that all those nights were shaping me, too.

Every picture book, every character voice, every rhythm and rhyme was gently guiding me… teaching me how stories work, what captures a child’s attention, and how words can sing on a page.

Now, as a children’s author, I can see just how much those years of reading aloud helped me grow into the writer I am today.
