At 21, I flew to Bangkok ready to help change the world. 🌏✨
I came home with a badly negotiated suit, almost no tourist photos and a love of travel that would shape my life. ✈️🇹🇭💛
In November 2015, I represented Aotearoa New Zealand at One Young World as an LGBTQIA+ activist. 🇳🇿🌈
It was my first trip beyond New Zealand and Australia, and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. 🛂🗺️🫠
I got lost constantly, missed almost every tourist attraction, paid far too much for street food and let a tuk tuk driver convince me that his friend’s suit shop was an essential Bangkok experience. 🛺🍜💸🕴️
But I walked. 👟🏙️
Somewhere among the traffic, food stalls and wrong turns, I discovered something I still love about travel: the feeling of being one tiny person, briefly becoming part of an enormous city. 🌆💫
One Young World was unforgettable. Hearing speakers including Kofi Annan and meeting young people creating change around the world made me believe even more strongly in what was possible. 🎤🌍✨
Another highlight was visiting the Thai Autism Vocational Center, connected with Autisticthai Foundation. The little deer keyring in these photos came home with me from that visit, and I have kept it ever since. 🦌🔑💛
At the closing ceremony, we were asked to write the mission we wanted to carry into the world.
Mine said:
“END LGBTQI+ DISCRIMINATION & HOMELESSNESS.” 🌈
More than ten years later, that mission remains true.
The love of travel became WānaTravel. ✈️🌏
The mission became The Out Index | LGBTQIA+ Travel Index & Community. 🌈🗺️
Bangkok was not the trip where I saw everything.
It was the trip that showed me why I wanted to keep seeing the world. 💛✨
What trip made you fall in love with travel? ✈️
