Come and join us on a trip to our favourite place on Lake Wanaka, Mou Waho Island. Where you can find an island, on a lake, on an island, on a lake, on an island on the sea! Mou Waho Island is a p

rotected nature reserve and is home to many native New Zealand birds including the curious and flightless Weka. A short walk takes you to the top of the island where you will be exposed to breathtaking panoramic views of the Arethusa pool, Lake Wanaka and its surrounding peaks. Our water taxi leaves Wanaka Marina twice-daily travelling 15km up Lake Wanaka, passing Mou Tapu Island and the steep cliff of fisherman's cove to Mou Waho Island. Your friendly and knowledgeable skipper will inform you of the fascinating geology of the alps and the glaciers that created the lake as you travel along its sparkling waters. Stay for 1.5 hours on the island before heading back to shore, or go in the morning and spend the day as you please before catching the afternoon taxi home. Wanaka Explorer 4x4:

Wanaka Explorer 4x4 offers you the ultimate lake and mountain adventure. The dramatic glacial calved basin filled with the melt water from seasonal snows with ancient glaciers is the backdrop to your adventure with us. Boat through the calm waters of Lake Wanaka's Stevenson's arm - a constantly changing vista of steep walls and jagged peaks leads to a small beach where you will disembark to board our 4x4 vehicle. Climbing above the lake your view expands until all of Lake Wanaka lays beneath you in a stunning panorama of sparkling blue water and rows of rugged alpine peaks. Departs daily 9 am & 1 pm

Winter really isn’t that bad around here.

More calm days on the lake, stunning scenery, and a whole lot more peace and quiet.

We’re running our Mou Waho Island tours throughout winter — usually departing at 10am (with occasional time changes) - closed 7th - 23rd of July.

In our 10 seasons here, we’ve only had snow twice… and both were in 2025 — once in autumn and again in spring! This photo was taken at the end of October 🤍

The start of the inversion marks the end of our 2025/2026 season 🌫️ What a season it’s been!

Summer never really came, and the weather was often pretty average, but the spirits of all our guests were high — embracing the conditions and elements along the way!

We took many of you to Mou Waho Island and on our Wānaka 4x4 Explorer Tours, and had a great launch of our new Shepherds Lookout Trip!

We also had a couple of proposals 💍, welcomed lots of familiar faces back again, and after 3 attempts camping on the island, our returning guest Roger finally captured the amazing Aurora shot on the weekend ✨ Photo to come at a later date!

And to top it off, we added Wānaka Wine Tours! So now we’ve got you sorted on both the water and the land 🍷

While the main season may be wrapping up, our Mou Waho Island trips will continue running over winter ❄️

Hannah on her very last trip to Mou Waho Island today before heading across to Australia to pursue her career as an aerialist.

To mark the moment, we looked back at the words most often used in reviews about her — and they say a lot about the impact she’s made.

Hannah started with us over two years ago as an apprentice, completing her training in some of the toughest weather conditions — the perfect preparation for earning her commercial skipper licence. Since then, she’s spent two seasons confidently at the helm, and we couldn’t be prouder of everything she’s achieved.

While we’re incredibly sad to see her go, we’re also excited for what’s ahead as she follows her passion into the world of aerial performance in Australia.

We’re going to miss you, Hannah 💙
