I knew New Zealand was going to be beautiful, but I don’t think I realised just how much there is to see until we actually started driving it.

One day you’re watching whales off the coast, the next you’re surrounded by mountains, walking through geothermal landscapes or stopping at yet another lake because somehow this one is even bluer than the last.

And honestly, some of my favourite moments weren’t even the places we’d planned to see. They were the random stops, the roads we took our time on and the views that made us pull over for ā€œjust one photoā€ (which was obviously never just one).
If there’s one way I’d recommend seeing New Zealand, it’s by road. šŸš—šŸ‡³šŸ‡æ

Wellington packs a lot into a remarkably small city.
There’s Parliament and Te Papa, hillside gardens, native birds, independent shops, hidden food spots and a wild coastline, all within easy reach of the centre.
Allow at least two full days. Explore the city on foot, give Te Papa more time than expected and keep a clear afternoon for the coast.
Save this for a future New Zealand road trip šŸ‡³šŸ‡æ

If someone asked me how to spend two weeks in New Zealand’s South Island, this is the route I’d recommend!

It takes you through Queenstown, Wānaka, Franz Josef, Aoraki / Mount Cook, Dunedin and Milford Sound, with plenty of time to enjoy the journey in between. There are glacier flights, scenic train rides, wildlife cruises and some of the best drives you’ll ever do, but also time for long lunches, coffee stops and those places you stumble across unexpectedly.
No two travellers are the same, so think of this as a starting point. From here, it’s easy to add an extra night, swap an experience or slow the pace down to suit the way you like to travel.

If this sounds like your kind of trip, you’ll find the full itinerary via the link in the comments!

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve visited Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, but somehow it never gets old.

Every trip follows the same routine, the drive along Lake Pukaki, a hike (usually the Ho**er Valley Track), and one last stop at The Hermitage before heading home. It’s become one of my favourite traditions, and I still dread leaving every single time.

If you’re planning a South Island road trip, my biggest piece of advice is simple: don’t rush it. Stay a couple of nights, wake up to the mountains, experience the Dark Sky Reserve, and give yourself time to simply soak it all in.

I’ve shared all of my favourite spots, walks, places to eat and personal tips in my latest travel guide. Link in the comments!
