This project is featured in the current edition of Here Magazine (No29) in store now.

"There is a popular urbanist narrative these days that the traditional weatherboard villa is cold, damp, and obsolete. But as this beautifully renovated late- Victorian home in Te Whanganui-a-Tara shows, with a little love, attention and sensitivity, the villa can be the perfect contemporary home without losing its heritage charm. " Andrew Paul Wood, Here Magazine

Images and plans of our Palladian Beach House Project and "The Cross"

Both houses share the same footprint and roof form, but have inverse plan forms and offer different experiences of the site.

Both houses were presented to our clients as alternate schemes for the same project.

Palladian Villa-
NZ beach house meets Palladian Villa. Palladian principals of a central courtyard, no corridors and an axial processional route are layered into this rural beach house on the Kapiti Coast. The result is a nontraditional beach home providing sanctuary from the harsh coastal conditions.

The Cross-
The house design focusses on a robust simplicity of form and structure, efficient unconventional planning and the provision for multi-use outdoor rooms that provide protected outdoor living, no matter what way the wind is blowing!

The cross shaped floor plan is one room wide and based on a nine square grid. With voids at each corner, there are four rooms that extend out from the core, eliminating the need for any corridor space and allowing each room to connect out to outdoor rooms, the sun and the views. At the forms centre is a services core housing the laundry and bathroom on one side and the back wall of the kitchen on the other which connects out to the kitchen dining room.

Can you guess which option the clients selected?
