Zealandia - such a top spot and what an amazing Patron it has! No wonder it is on TIME's 2019 list of the World's 100 Greatest Places

We were delighted to host our Patron, the Right Honourable Helen Clark and husband, Peter Davis to showcase the ongoing progress of our 500-year restoration vision. A lifelong conservationist, Helen Clark first became involved with ZEALANDIA during the early releases of kiwi into the sanctuary, and became Patron in late 2018, taking over from Sir Michael Hardie-Boys.

If you would like to join Helen in supporting conservation in Wellington, consider becoming a member – visit our website to find out how!

Definitely a cool moth!

Definitely a cool moth!

This week's Critter Of The Week is the Grays River grass moth!

Don't be fooled this little critter is one tough moth. It survives drowning in parts of it's life cycle and then survives extreme drought in others!

The Grays River grass moth is endemic to Mackenzie Basin and it a threatened, Nationally Critical. It's locally common near the roadside in seasonally wet areas, near the Basin and can be found feeding on the nectar of exotic yellow daisies.

The main threats to this critters is the fact that females are flightless, limiting the species distribution and yup, you guessed it, habitat destruction.

The Karori Lighthouse found in the rear of the photo was built over several months in 1915 as a scout and soldier amongst New Zealand's troop of coastal lights. Sometimes known as "The Leaning Lighthouse" due to the notorious Wellington wind, it has provided over 80 years of service to sailors and seafarers as a warning of the nearby coast. This coast is home to a large pod of seals like the cheeky guy in the picture!

To take a closer look at this lighthouse (and the seals of course!) come and jump on a Wellington Nature Tour
