DAY 12 - Chicago, Illinois

Today was our explore Chicago day and started with a visit to the "Gold Room" at our Hotel. This room is 125 years old and every American President has held a function in this room since it was built.

We then made our way to the start of Route 66 in Chicago before heading 103 floors up in the Willis Tower for 360 degree views of this great city.

The Hop On/Off bus is a great way to explore City and it was combined with an architectural river cruise on the Chicago River.

The exciting day ended up with an excellent dinner at Thai Spoon followed by some world class Blues music at one of the oldest clubs in Chicago - Blue Chicago

DAY 11 - La Crosse to Chicago, Illinois

A special day as we made our way to Chicago and the start of Route 66. We took the quiet country roads of Wisconsin for a tour of Ringbrothers who are famous for building absolutely STUNNING pro-touring style vehicles. Mike & Jim Ring have won many awards at major events such as SEMA and are currently doing media work with Jay Leno.

Ryan is a great host and gave us an informative and entertain tour through the body shop, fab shop and machine shop where we saw CNC machines making a variety of parts.

The highlight was seeing Octavia in the flesh - we saw this Aston Martin being built last year and WOW - it's a stunning vehicle.

After safely arriving at the Congress Plaza Hotel on the main street of Chicago we enjoyed a welcome drink in the Hotel bar then made our way to Buddy Guy Legends Bar for dinner and entertainment. Buddy Guy is 90 years old next week and not only a member of the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, he has also won NINE Grammy Awards including one this year. An absolute legend - and he was in the house and performed for us!

DAY 10 - Sioux Falls to La Crosse, Wisconsin

GET LOST! That's our theme for today....

Our first stop was a tour of the Okoboji Classic Car Museum which is AMAZING with the world's longest hand painted mural which plays tricks on the eyes. It took one artist 2 years and 4 months to do.

We then did some exploring of towns along the route then had a pizza and beer cruise on the Mississippi River on the La Crosse River Queen paddle boat on a perfect evening.

The day ended with a few quiet drinks next to the river at our Hotel outdoor bar.

DAY 9 - Rapid City to Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Our 2nd longest driving day - but what a day it was!

Our first this morning was to the town of Wall, where the local Drug Store is a South Dakota icon. With lots of shops in a Western theme it's a great place to visit.

Next up was a drive through the Badlands National Park - photos don't do this place any justice at all. It's AMAZING with many OH WOW moments.

Our next stop was the Pioneer Auto Show in Murdo, Sth Dakota which has over 275 vehicles on display - many of them are 100& original and un-restored.

We have 2 "Kiwi" birthdays today - John & Steve so naturally we had a celebration for them tonight. We'll celebrate their USA birthday tomorrow!

DAY 7 - Salt Lake City to Casper, Wyoming

Our longest driving day as we keep making our way north east towards Chicago.

We started with a visit to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for the show "Music of the Spoken Word" which has been broadcast every Sunday since 1929! The choir & orchestra are just perfect...

Leaving Salt Lake City we traveled over the Rockies into Wyoming with the scenery changing along the way.

Our Hotel is the fantastic Cmon' Inn which is like a big log cabin with 5 big spa pools and indoor swimming pool. A fantastic dinner across the road at the Texas Roadhouse where we celebrated Mark 2's NZ birthday.

DAY 6 -Wendover to Salt Lake City, Utah

Although we only had about 120 miles to travel today we filled it up with some cool things to do starting with a visit to the iconic Wendover Will statue for a photo shoot.

We then made out way to the historic Wendover Air Base which was the home of the Enloa Gay - the aircraft that dropped the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima. We were given a private tour and even drove our Jeeps out onto the runway area to visit the hangar and bomb loading pit!

Wendover is home of the Bonneville Speedway salt flats. The salt was dry so we were able to drive out onto the salt for about 1 mile for another photo shoot. It was very special after watching the movie "The World's Fastest Indian" at the Hotel last night just a few miles away.

We were treated to a visit to Kindig-IT which is famous from the TV show "Bitchin' Rides". Dave Kindig and crew build AMAZING cars and won many awards including the prestigious Ridler Award at the Detroit Autorama show - twice!

Our good friend Ira manages the workshop so with his with Janelle they arranged to open up the workshop for a private tour - it's Saturday and they are closed. Dave Kindig's son Drew also came along and gave us an informative background to the family business and opened up the gift shop for lots of shopping.

An extra bonus was meeting Kev Dog from the show who had come in to work on his own project.

We're staying at the Perry Hotel which is one of the oldest hotels in downtown Salt Lake City so it's in a great location to explore this beautiful and clean city.

What a day!

DAY 5 - Las Vegas to Wendover, Utah

After an entertaining final night in Vegas it was time to hit the Highway heading north to Wendover. After 30 miles we left the Interstate and had quieter country roads with vast scenery through the Great Basin National Park.

We traveled a short section of the Extraterrestrial Highway before the Sliver State Challenge to Ely which is the fastest road race in the world. The record for the highest average speed is 219mph (353 km/h) for the 90 mile road course - we didn't get close to that!

Tonight we had a pizza and movie night at the Hotel watching the World's Fastest Indian which was filmed in the area and traveled the same roads as Burt Munro today.
