When you’re out bushwalking in The Coromandel, keep an eye on the forest floor 👀🍄

The werewere-kōkako — New Zealand’s own electric-blue mushroom are out and about. It’s more than just a showstopper, it’s a sign the forest is thriving, with fewer pests around to nibble on it.

And yep, it’s so iconic it even made it onto our $50 note — the only banknote in the world to feature fungi!

Kaumātua have placed a rāhui in Whangamatā from today, Thursday 1 May, following a tragic accident.

As a sign of respect, the community is kindly asked to refrain from recreational activities such as fishing, kaimoana (seafood) collection, swimming, surfing and boating at the beach and harbour. The rāhui will be lifted at nightfall on Saturday, allowing beach activities to resume on Sunday 4 May.

We extend our condolences to the whānau, friends and Whangamatā community during this difficult time.
