This is a very exciting story of a bold and courageous journey for a team of papermakers with unique abilities. Nowhere else in NZ is there a working papermill using completely recycled materials, making totally handcrafted products. The Papermill delivers meaningful work experience for people with intellectual disabilities. The facilities in Whangarei are available to the public as an educational

and tourist attraction. And if you like shopping - then come and see us too - our shop is full of interesting art and paper products - all unique pieces - handmade - here in Whangarei, New Zealand.

What an incredible morning with our amazing board of trustees!

Our trustees got hands-on with the full papermaking process — preparing fibre (flax), scutching (cotton), and hand mulching. Paul walked them through the machines, while Nicole and Michele led the way in making beautiful flax paper and cards. There was even paper pulp painting involved (yes, it's as fun as it sounds)! 🎨

We literally had to drag them out of the papermaking studio — they were having way too much fun!

Next was a fun session in the creative studio where everyone tried their hand at simple bookmaking — folding, stitching, and decorating their own little creations.

And of course, all that hard work called for a celebration — we wrapped up with a BBQ lunch together.

So grateful for this incredible group of people who give their time and passion to support The Papermill. Here's to many more creative adventures together!

Let's be honest — everyone needs cleaning products!

We're excited to launch our fundraiser to help us take our creativity to the next level here at The Papermill! We're raising funds for a Cricut Maker 4 smart cutting machine, and to get there we're selling will&able eco-friendly cleaning starter packs!

Made by people just like us 😊 These products are kind to the planet AND they actually work!
🎯 Our goal: sell 100 packs
👇 All the details are in the comments below

Share this post and help us spread the word — every pack sold gets us one step closer!

Does anyone have any old encyclopedias they no longer need? We’re looking for some to use in our exhibition projects. We’ll reuse the covers, cut out images, and recycle the pages into handmade paper. Any volumes not used for papermaking will be perfect for pressing flowers!

It might be the end of the week but we are stilly fully focused on our work!

Keegan embedded a map on NZ into a beautiful sheet of recycled and flax fibre paper. Alex wrote his goals into his journal. Angela is cutting up banana skins as a first step in creating banana skin paper - a personal goal of hers. And everyone has been having a go at 'scutching' cotton fibre with fabulous new tools handcrafted by Joe Worthy!

So much creativity, learning and achievement happening in our studio — we love seeing our Papermakers setting goals and giving things a go!
