Over the past month living in Muscat, I’ve discovered so many hidden gems that have made my study abroad experience even more memorable. Muscat is a huge and underrated city, and it surprises you every day. Here are some of the things I’ve enjoyed so far:
Great food 🍽️
•There’s no shortage of amazing Middle Eastern restaurants in Muscat. One of my favorite BBQ spots is Tabeekh and BBQ right downstairs from Noor Majan. In winter, there are also lots of aesthetic outdoor restaurants and cafes
Cafés ☕️
•Muscat has a big café culture, with top-tier matcha and coffee. They’re also great spots to study and people-watch.
Omani culture 💐
•Omani culture is everywhere — from dishes like shuwa and camel miqlai, to ancient forts scattered around the city and nearby, to rose and frankincense sold in the souq.
Nature 🌊
•Nature is just a short car or boat ride away. The water near the Daymaniyat Islands and Al-Bustan is crystal clear and perfect for snorkeling. There are also many wadis to explore and the Jebel Akhdar mountains are just a day trip away.
Wellness 🧘♀️
•Muscat has great yoga and pilates studios for women — perfect for staying active after class and meeting local women.
Omani history 🏛️
•You can explore Oman’s history at museums like the National Museum and Bait Al Zubair in Muscat, or Oman Across the Ages in Nizwa. But history also shows up in daily life and traditions.
Shopping 🛍️
•Oman has great shopping for both men and women. Women can find beautiful abayas, mukhawir, and natural skincare products. Men can shop for traditional Omani clothing and luxury sandals.
Mix of modernity and tradition 🌆
•Many developments in Muscat are brand new, like the park near Al Khuwair Square, but they blend seamlessly into traditional Omani architecture. The city takes care to preserve its cultural identity while modernizing.
Sunsets 🌅
•The light and air in Oman make the sunsets feel extra special. One of the best places to catch the sunset is from the top of Muttrah Fort, just 20 minutes from Noor Majan.
