The most sought-after birds aren’t always the most colorful: the Ochraceous Pewee (Contopus ochraceous) is one of Central America’s most coveted species, even by the most seasoned world birders.
A very discreet bird that spends most of its time quietly in the cloud forest canopy, it is often unpredictable and hard to detect in its very restricted range and habitat.
Tamandua’s Cloud Forest Reserve in Panama offers great chances to see eye-level and photograph this and many other elusive species.

Despite lacking talons or a particularly strong bill, the Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno) becomes a very efficient predator during the breeding season, when both male & female bring a variety of animal prey to their nestling chick. This male with a captured fence lizard (Sceloporus sp.) was photographed by our friend and guest Jeri Langham at .totumas during one of our Panama Highlands tours 🇵🇦
