I'd like to share a little bit of the fruits we have in Panama that might not be as common in your country. I'd like to introduce a fruit we call Tomato de Arbol. In English, The name is tree tomato for Tamarillo The plant, which can grow over six meters tall, belongs to the nightshade family, like the tomato. The egg-shaped shape and size of the fruit are also similar to the tomato, as is the red or yellow color. The taste, however, is hardly comparable. A fully ripe tamarillo is more reminiscent of plums in terms of taste and the texture of the flesh. Inside the fruit, the edible seeds are in a sweet, jelly-like mass; towards the outside, the flesh becomes firmer and less sweet. The skin is also edible but has a slightly bitter taste. A ripe tamarillo is characterized by a light to intense red color. The skin of the fruit should give slightly when pressed. If the tomatillo is dark red and soft, it has already reached its optimal level of ripeness and should be eaten immediately. Ripe fruit can be stored in the refrigerator for about a week, while dark yellow to light red tamarillos can be kept in the fridge for up to two weeks. The riper the fruit, the sweeter the taste, and its high vitamin C content could easily compete with many citrus fruits. The tree tomato also has plenty of vitamin A, calcium, potassium, iron, and phosphorus. The quickest and easiest way to enjoy it is to halve the Tamarillo and eat it with a spoon like a kiwi. Otherwise, you can prepare sweet or salty fruit, create exotic drinks, and even conjure chutneys and dips from Tamarillo. Tip: The bitter peel can be easily removed by pouring boiling water over the Tamarillo.
Maybe you'd like to try it once
I love to eat meat, and I often use Tamarillo on top
Peel the tamarillos (a vegetable peeler is handy), cut out the flower stalk in a cone shape, and cut into 1 cm thick slices.
Cut lime into 4 slices, squeeze the juice out of the ends, and collect it.
Fry the meat in hot oil. Remove from the pan and keep warm.
Briefly fry the lime slices and the tamarillos in the frying fat, caramelize them with sugar, and place them on the meat. Voila, delicious, simple, mouthwatering.
