On April 26th, we lost our almost 93 year old grandmother.
I often took for granted how fortunate I was to live in the same city as My grandmother and even live under the same roof as her for so many years. I know I got easily frustrated by not being able to easily communicate with her due to my lack of Gujrati speaking skills. But I was lucky, Ben has been able to visit my different homes and celebrate with me, she was able to come to a dance performance when I was on the RAAS team in college and she got to spend time with my dog- all things that she wasnt able to experience with most of her other grandkids. Like many of you, I will remember and miss her smile the most in her absence. It didnt take much, just listening to her talk for a few minutes made her usually beam. One of my favorite memories was when she saw my ho**ah pipe. Her eyes opened wide when she saw it and she was excited to talk about it. She recommended that I put it on display in the living room and told me that as a little girl, she used to heat up the coals for her dad and brothers when they smoked their ho**ah pipe. I was surprised that she even knew what a ho**ah pipe was, let alone have such a positive memory of one.
As surreal as it is that we wont get to experience that smile again or hear her voice, we should all take solace in the long and blessed life she lived. She is survived by her husband of nearly 75 years along with her 5 children, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. May we continue to honor and celebrate her life by remembering to smile a little more and express our gratitude for her role in all of our existences. @ Austin, Texas
